What are The lines between staffs. And how do I reproduce them?

It indicates that the D is a continuation of the voice in the bottom staff. The SmartShape tool has a way of drawing lines. This does not strike me as good notation, though.

Use the SmartShape line tool to draw a horizontal line (the default) and then use the handles to move it to where you want it.

I must be doing something wrong. I have tried several times and different ways but it just isn't working for me.

I can not duplicate this staff. No matter how I try it just doesn't come out to a good count.
In the smart shape tool the one marked line tool is the one you're talking about, right?
I can draw the line. It just does seem to do anything.

You have not tried the sub-tool Custom Line Tool?

It looks to me like there are hidden rests opposite each group.

In this example, I didn't hide the eighth rests or final quarter rest, for clarity.

The one marked Line Tool, yes. Double-click at the starting point, keeping the click button down on the second click. Drag it to the ending point. This can be tricky, so try again if nothing happens. If you need to adjust it afterwards, you can drag the little handles of the endpoints to be where you want. (I don't think you need a custom line.)

(You'll need to master double-click-drag to create hairpins, too.)
(And slurs.)

That made a difference. Hidden rest should be outlawed.
