Hello specialists....
I could not find it with the search-option and this question must have been asked before:
Is there a way I can open a file in Finale 2005a that has been made in Finale 2006???
I found a great arrangement of "song for my father" for our saxophone-orchestra (11 saxes) but our conductor cannot open it in his Finale 2005a
to make some modifications in the sheets.
Any help is very appriciated!
Paul

A. Your conductor can open the 2006 file in Finale NotePad 2006 or Finale NotePad 2007.
With NotePad it's possible to edit the file a little, but NotePad's layout features are very limited.
B. The best way of transferring from 2006 format to 2005 format is via the MusicXML file format.
This solution requires that you have Finale 2006 (NotePad can't export).
With the MusicXML format both the music and the layout (at least most of the layout) will get transferred.
To do so, open the file in Finale 2006, and export it as a MusicXML file.
Then import the MusicXML file into Finale 2005.
The MusicXML export/import is best when done with the Dolet plug-in which you can buy here:
http://www.recordare.com
However, Finale 2006 comes with free, built-in MusicXML export/import (a "Dolet Lite" feature).
It's not as good as the Dolet plug-in, but it does a fair job.
The Windows version of Finale 2005 has MusicXML import as a free, built-in "Dolet Lite" feature.
The Mac OS version of Finale 2005 can only import MusicXML via the Dolet plug-in.
C. If you buy SongWriter (SongWriter costs 40 $ if you trade up from NotePad), you can export the 2006 file as a MIDI file.
And Finale 2005 can import MIDI files.
Note, however, that all the layout will be lost; only the music will get transferred.

Peter's MusicXML suggestion is the way to go. You can download and install the 30 day demo of PrintMusic 2007, use that to open your file, and then export the file as a MusicXML document which can be opened in 2005 with the MusicXML plug-in there. I believe when you install the MusicXML plug-in for Finale 2005 that it will also function for a limited time without purchasing it.
