total newbie question regarding midi routing

I am trying to get Finale 2007 to send midi to an external tine generator. I have my tone generator set for midi channels 1-16 on the finale midi setup screen, but I can only select the built in softsynth as an output on the instrument setup screen and in the new document wizard. I have looked through the manual and am still confounded. The mac coreaudio/midi setup is fine and I can get cubase to work perfectly. I realize that the solution is probably something completely obvious but I don't know what it is. Any help would be MUCH apreciated.
