How could I make shorter the last measure without modifying the rest of the staff?

Did you try the music spacing procedure, ended with "Update layout" ?
If the result is not to your liking, in the measure tool, grab the top handles of the measures to move the bar lines. And "Update layout" again.

Have you got an anacrusis/lead-in/pick-up note at the beginning, and are you trying to make the last bar (measure, whatever Finale calls it) shorter so that it makes up the first bar?
I cannot work out where to do this, so I'd appreciate the help also - I found the 'pick-up measure' easily enough, but cannot find where the irregular bar feature is (it was so simple in Sibelius..). I am on Finale 08.
