Re-write rhythm for entire piece

I took a midi sound file and converted tracks to staves to get a score. The thing is, the rhythm came out as double time. Example: The piece is and should be in 6/8. But instead of a pattern of 3 eighths and a dotted quarter, I get 3 sixteenths and a dotted eight. Make sense? Is there a way I can stretch out the rhythm for the entire piece without re-doing it all?

1) Key Signature Tool.
Change the time signature to 6/8.
In the dialog box Time Signature, make sure that "Rebar Music" is de-selected.
Now the second half of each measure is empty.
2) Selection Tool.
Select All.
Utilities menu > Change > Note Durations...
Change All Note Durations By 200 %.

Hmm - I'm finding a problem with this. After changing the note duration, when I play back I get a big train wreck... as if it's not changing all by the same % or something. I am using Ctrl A to "select all."
What's going on?

operaflute,
Could you e-mail me a sample document?
It's often easier to find the culprit when you have the actual .MUS Finale document to examine.

OK, now I understand.
I thought that the time signature was 6/16.
But the time signature is actually 6/8.
So you want to have the double note values and twice as many barlines.
Here are the steps:
1) Key Signature Tool.
Double-click the first measure.
In the dialog box Time Signature, change the number of beats to 1.
The time signature will now display as 3/8.
Make sure that "Rebar Music" is selected.
Click OK.
Now you have twice as many barlines.
2) Key Signature Tool.
Change the time signature to 6/8 (change the number of beats to 2).
In the dialog box Time Signature, make sure that "Rebar Music" is de-selected.
Now the second half of each measure is empty.
3) Selection Tool.
Select All.
Utilities menu > Change > Note Durations...
Change All Note Durations By 200 %.
Don't forget to include tuplets.

Hmm your file works great, but when I replicate the steps, I don't get the same results. I still get a train wreck. Frustrating.
Anyway, here's another question. Why, when I delete the first empty bar in your file, does the play back change to a piano sound, rather than keeping the orchestra sound?

Did you include tuplets when you doubled all note values?operaflute wrote:Hmm your file works great, but when I replicate the steps, I don't get the same results. I still get a train wreck...
It's a check box in the dialog box "Change Note Durations".
Window menu > Instrument Listoperaflute wrote:...Why, when I delete the first empty bar in your file, does the play back change to a piano sound, rather than keeping the orchestra sound?
If you look in the Instrument List, you will see that all staves are set to a piano sound.
The orchestra-sound-patches are inserted in the first measure (the rest measure).
To get the orchestra sound without having the rest measure, go to the window "Instrument List", and set the correct instrument for each staff.
You will have to edit the instruments:
View by Instruments,
in the column "Instrument", click on the instrument name.
When you do so, the button "Edit Instrument..." is no longer greyed out.
Click the button "Edit Instrument...".
Choose the correct General MIDI patch for each instrument.
You may also want to change the instrument name.
Not that the instrument name matters for playback, but it's nice to know what you are doing...
Peter
PS
I note that the Flute staff is muted in the Instrument List.
Did you do that deliberately?

I did include tuplets. I should also select rebar music when changing note duration, correct?
Sounds easier to just leave the empty bar! The whole midi patch thing never makes sense to me.
I do mute the flute part, since *I* am the flutist! I use these to practice my flute parts with accompaniment. It's great to be able to change the tempo!

I didn't include Rebar Music, since it doesn't matter:operaflute wrote:I did include tuplets. I should also select rebar music when changing note duration, correct?...
The music is already rebarred.
Your words "when I play back, I get a big train wreck" made me suspect a playback issue.
Therefore my notification about "Include Tuplets".
Did you perhaps mean a layout issue, not a playback issue?
Have you applied music spacing, and updated layout?

Def a play back issue, not layout. I'll try without rebar music and see...

We need more info about the actual Finale document.henry_ngo wrote:… I can double the notes values of the entire piece however all the chords can NOT re-align.
It is all wrong …
The best solution is probably that you attach a Finale sample document here.
