Okay...
Why are tuplets such a pain?
The picture shows what I'm trying to do. I'm in 4.
What I'm trying to do is a second triplet of one eighth, two sixteenths and an eighth. The software will allow me to place the first one, but when I try to do the second the same way, it will only allow one eighth and three sixteenths (two eighths and a sixteenth, etc)
The method I used to get the first one:
1. Place the eighth
2. press "9"
3. add the first sixteenth over the second eighth rest
4. the system gives back a sixteenth rest to go with the remaining eighth rest
5. place the last eighth
When I try to do the second pattern, when I get to step 4, it doesn't give me the sixteenth rest. The sixteenth note just wipes out the middle rest altogether. Nothing I can come up with (including the tuplet tool) helps. Is it something to do with having it at the end of the measure, and why should it make any difference?
triplet of eighth, two sixteenths, eighth - twice

You are entering music with the Simple Entry Tool (not with the Speedy Entry Tool) - right?
There are several ways to enter a tuplet.
Most of the ways let you end a measure with a tuplet, but your way of doing it will only work, if you allow Finale to “overfill” the measure:
In the Simple Entry Options, de-select {Check for Extra Notes}.
When you are done, you can select {Check for Extra Notes} again.

To enter the triplet on the last beat, follow these steps. Exactly.
Let's assume you have three beats in the measure, already.
Simple Entry (and it doesn't matter whether Check for Extra Notes is checked or not.)
4, F, 9
3, F, E
4, D
As is common with mixed tuplets, it may generate an additional 1/8 rest that looks like it's in the next measure. Just arrow forward to it and delete.
