Hey everybody,

I have run into yet another problem with the hyphen tool: All of a sudden Finale keeps making those hyphens all across the page, starting at some bar and going on till the end of the piece. It's in two different staves, in one staff actually in two lines one on top of the other. I think it might have to do with some C&P or cue notes involving lyrics that I did, but I can't find out what it is. I've already tried to delete and re-enter suspicious candidates, and also edit the data in the lyrics window. Nothing helped. Also I thought it might have had to do with left-over lyrics that remained in the lyrics window after i deleted the content of a specific section, but when I look at my backup files, the problem only emerged way after I did that, so it must be because of something else. Anybody an idea?

If there's no solution, I'll drop the hyphens all together (in the document options), but obviously I would like to find a cleaner solution.

Btw, I mainly used TYPE INTO SCORE option, so maybe there's the problem?

Thanks so much in advance and cheers to everyone! :)

Make sure there's not a hyphen at the end of "Mensch, pallmall" or whatever it says. Finale thinks the lyric is in the middle of a word.

I agree with Motet. The only problem you might run into would be word extensions (red lines) which appear at the end of words. Let us know if that’s the case, and we’ll help you deal with them.

Hello Motet and miker,

thanks for your quick replies. It doesn't show a hyphen in the lyrics window and also, the problem doesn't disappear when I type in the words a second time (or third or fourth, for that matter :D ) Also between this problem occurred without me having changed anything in that section, I only noticed it something like 100 bars down the line...
The hyphen technically also start already in the measure before in the upper system, after "als Wohltat". Here again, I haven't changed anything before this problem occurred.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again! :)

You might be right that it's a remnant of the deleted lyric. The only think I can suggest is to try deleting the cue and recreating it.

Try selecting the area > clear selected items > lyrics

Thanks for both your replies!

@Motet: I had already tried that, that didn't help.

@Miker: This worked! I deleted the lyrics in that way and the hyphen disappeared! :) BUT: Now other hyphens appear in different spots. :?: :?: Any clue what this means? I can keep repeating the deleting operation and re-entering the lyrics, but since the piece is fairly long and complex, this will end up being very tedious and time-consuming...

Thanks so much, you've already half-way saved me!

Indeed.

When you use the entry method Type Into Score, the lyrics will get added to the Lyrics window in the “type order”.
Unless you are very careful, the “type order” can easily be different from the “score order”.
And then you get problems - like your recent problems.

A safer entry method:
Enter the lyrics in the Lyrics window.
Then, assign the lyrics via Click Assignment.
- And you will not get any of the problems you are experiencing now.

Thanks Peter Thomsen for that info. I will make sure to do it like that the next time.

For this score though, is there anything I can do to remedy this? Or is just gonna be freestyle now like I suggested in my last post? (Basically re-entering a big portion of the lyrics).

Also, I realized that not all lyrics get deleted from the lyrics window if I delete the corresponding lines in the score. It's like they remain like an artefact. Does that make any sense? And is there anything I could do to "clean that up"?

Thanks so much for all your invaluable advice!

They may be in another verse.

In a such case the Selection Tool is your friend.
From the Selection Tool double-click on the “artefact” lyrics.
Finale will take you to the relevant verse - look in the Lyrics window.

Thanks Peter.

Actually what I meant is the other way round: They are not visible in the score anymore, but only in the lyrics window. And there actually even several times! (might be because at an earlier stage I used cue notes with copying lyrics in other staves extensively — never gonna do that again!) It would be great if a double-click IN the lyrics window would lead me to hidden artefacts in the score, but you seem to be pointing at the opposite... Or is there a way to achieve that?

Thanks again, all best!

Oops, sorry - I misunderstood.

Something to try:
Make a duplicate copy of the Finale document (just in case something goes wrong).

Open the duplicate document.
In the Lyrics window, delete the “artefact” lyrics.
Examine the score carefully, and make sure that the lyrics deletion has not affected the layout in the score.

Hey, no problem! :)

Yes, I had tried that already, it shifted the rest of the lyrics super complicatedly, so un-did it right away again... But I will try again and see what happens, with a duplicate copy.

Finale always keep you on your toes... :D Thanks again for your help.
