brackets (again)

Post by musicus » Sat Oct 17, 2020 8:10 pm

I have brackets in layer 2 of the lower staff. But as you can see
there are two in a row, from B to E. Is there any way to pull
the bottom of that bracket to the right so that I don't have
to create separate brackets for those notes? Thanks.

If you make the bracket in the Expression Tool with the Shape Designer and be sure to Allow Horizontal Stretching, it will do what you want.

Count me "confused". If those are to be played by the right hand, why aren't they written in the upper staff?

Good question. This is a piano transcription of an orchestral score here. The melody has to be shared alternately by RH and LH. There are three levels: melody, RH accompaniment and LH accompaniment. So the visual appearance has to look as uncluttered as possible. The result is perhaps not perfect.

Thanks. The Shape Designer is awfully tricky and I still have not figured out how to create the needed bracket with stretch limo.

Here's your file using Cross Staff notes instead of brackets.

Trying to duplicate your example, but there's one little oddity
which I can't figure out how to fix: the stem of the B. See attached.

I'm talking about the note sitting to the left of the stem
rather than the right.

I know Zuill knows this, but the easiest way to do cross-staff is to select the note and press Shift+Option+up-arrow.

What I'm saying is that I can't figure out how to shift the note or stem
so that it resembles what you did.

I tried that in this file, but it didn't do everything as the plugin usually does it. I applied the plugin, and the beam remained above the note. I'm guessing Musicus then dragged the beam down, giving the wrong look. So, this file needs manual fixing. I learned a long time ago when doing this manually to apply the Reverse Stem first. Usually, there won't need to be any adjustments to the beam. Musicus dragged the beam first, so the B is now on the wrong side of the stem. After I reversed the stem, the beam was now way too low, as it had been dragged before the stem was reversed. I then needed to drag it back up, which was extra work. So, for manual application, 1) Reverse Stem 2) adjust beam if needed.

So, the plugin does not always work correctly. My advice to anyone is to learn how to do cross-staff with beamed notes manually, so that you know all the steps the plugin should do automatically, just in case the plugin fails, as with this file.

You're right! I could have sworn I tried it earlier and it worked, with the beam angle tool required to raise the beam up afterwards, but I can't reproduce it now. Maybe it's because it's treble clef to treble clef?
