Hi all,

In Finale 2016, I just created a new string quartet from the Template file. I've entered one measure of music - and I am getting no sound from the playback. And it is not scrolling during playback either. Contrast that with using the Setup Wizard, if I create the same quartet there and follow the wizard through, then playback works great.

If I set up a new piece from a Finale template, is there anything extra I need to configure to make sure playback works?

I'm using Finale 2016 with Garritan Personal Orchestra 5 (Windows 10 64-bit)

Sometimes you need to click Reload MIDI Driver. Other times, relaunching Finale will do it. If the Template didn't load the instruments, then try Reassign Playback Sounds.

I clicked on both "Reload MIDI Driver" and also "Reassign MIDI Sounds" and neither of those helped. Attached is my Instrument List from Score Manager if that helps.

If you can attach the file that won't play back, maybe we can find out what's up.

By the way: you mention GPO 5. However, the screen shot you show uses GIfF. Both should work. I only have GIfF, so I could test this file.

P.S.: Here's a demo file set up from the Finale String Quartet template. Does this play?

The file you provided didn't play back for me either - same issue, no playback sound and no scrolling. Here is the file I created and am working on.

Your file plays back for me, both through MIDI and Audio Units.

This file plays for me as well. If this is the only file with the problem, and is created with the Template, and using the wizard gives success, then just stick with the Wizard for now.

P.S.: I revised the file a bit. Does this play?

When I open the revised file I get a like dialog box saying "Finale Audio Engine won't load" then I ok through it and it opens the file but won't play it. I've also went in and cleaned out all my Finale settings and INI files in my %APPDATA% hoping it would force Finale to reset. Still didn't fix the issue.

If I can't figure it out it's ok, I'll just use the Setup Wizard for every new project I start.

I use Direct Sound. I avoid ASIO. Which are you using? That might be part of the issue.

I usually use ASIO. But I just tried DirectSound and that seems to work ok. WASAPI works too but not nearly as well. Is there some what Finale interacts with ASIO mode that can cause trouble?

Not sure. It works for some, but it has always caused me problems. Also, I use a sample rate of 44,100, which you choose in the Windows settings. Finale doesn't like the higher sample rate Windows wants to use. This is especially an issue if you need to load an audio file into Finale. I use that feature when doing take-downs.

I notice when switching to DirectSound the actual audio playback is fine, but the scroll still doesn't work right. It is off, behind, or sometimes doesn't work at all.

That's when I click Reload MIDI Driver. See if that works.

Reload MIDI Driver didn't fix the scrolling. Playback sound is great, just no scrolling. The cursor will start but won't scroll.

Usually relaunching Finale fixes the scrolling. Make sure scrolling is turned on in playback settings. Sometimes it gets unchecked. In the event those things don't work, I have found restarting Windows does the trick.

A restart of Finale worked kind of - strolling works but it is well behind the actual audio. I've entered a 4-bar phrase, and the scrolling only starts after the audio is finished.

What sample rate are you using?

My Sampling rate in Windows is currently set at 16 bit, 48khz. Sound works great in my browser and for other apps like ITunes etc.

Finale often has problems handling that. Try 44,100 and see if the scrolling works better.

I changed the Windows sampling rate to 44.1 and rebooted the computer. Still same issue - playback audio is now fine, but scrolling does not initiate until after the playback ends.
