Hello Forum!
I am importing a midi file of a four part vocal piece. When I keep the default input values, everything comes out with a doubled octave. I don't want that, so I thought I could split the staves in two.
I went to:
open file
Import midi file options
set track to staff list
auto set to tracks/channels (I tried both)
Click on a channel
select split, multiple, split into two staves
The result: four staves, no matter what I do. I'm trying to split it into 8 staves so I can easily get rid of the doubled octaves. I have attached the offending file. I tried it with two other files of piano music, and they would not split, either. Is this just a tool that doesn't work?
Thanks for any help.

This doesn't work since the octaves on each track are on the same channel. But you can easily split each staff afterwards with Utilities > Explode Music.

Thanks, MMike and Miker!
How can one tell whether a midi file is in different channels or the same channel?
If the two notes were on separate channels, I would not need to split them, I could just use "auto set to channels", and it would split them. So, when is the split tool useful?
I tried Explode Music, and it worked fine when I realized I needed to do one line at a time. Great tip - thanks!
I don't know where JW Staff Polyphony is, so I didn't try it. No worries, since Explode worked so well.

you can find it (and many other very useful ones, particularly JW Change) here: http://www.finaletips.nu/index.php/down ... s-plug-ins
Once imported into Finale, you can see it in the score manager on the right next to Bank - Ch. (=Channel). Otherwise you'd need to look at it in a DAW.phrederica wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 8:20 pmHow can one tell whether a midi file is in different channels or the same channel?
