I am familiar with the option to change the pitch of a note by using the cursor pointer and pulling a note up or down. As far as I know, this must be done only after selecting the same note duration as the note one wishes to alter in pitch. Otherwise, the note will change time value to whatever was selected before an attempt was made to change the note's pitch.
I would find it vary valuable as a time saver if there were a null time value selection or some other mechanism that would allow the changing of the pitch without first selecting a duration. Is there a way to accomplish this in Finale?
If there were this capability, a melody could easily be change quite a bit without changing any durations.

I just found a curious method. I use the tie icon and it allows me to pull the note up or down, usually leaving a tie that is not tied to a next note. Then I can go through and delete all of the ties.
Is there a better method?

When I click-click on a note, it goes to the delete icon.
I haven't be able to make it work.

Perhaps it is because I have a Mac, but the control-key method isn't working.

Either Tools/Simple Entry/Repitch, or there should be a button on the Simple entry palette that looks like this. Once in that tool, you can just click above or below the note where you want the new pitch to be. If you miss, you can use up- or down-arrow.

In the Simple Palette:
If you just have a few isolated notes to change, double-click on the note to select it, and use the up or down arrows.
The tool is meant to change pitch without changing duration of a string of notes. It would be fine for changing the melody, as you asked in your original post.If you just have a few isolated notes to change, double-click on the note to select it, and use the up or down arrows.
