Hello, I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out here. I'm using Finale 27 on a windows 10 machine and am trying to open Finale 2001 Macintosh files that don't have any file extensions, just the name of the piece. (Actually, I think they are older than 2001 but the dialogue that pops up when I try to open them says Finale 2001). Anyway, Finale goes through the motions of trying to open them but then the program crashes. I've tried manually adding .mus file extensions but the same thing happens. I'm concerned they have become corrupted over the years being transferred from computer to computer, but if anyone has any insight as to how I might recover them it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Since you are using Finale v27, try adding the file name extension .musx (instead of the “legacy” extension .mus).

Then, the documents ought to open in Finale v27 - provided that they are not corrupted.

You could also try attaching one of them here - so that others can try opening, possibly with a Finale version older than v27.

Thanks for the suggestions. Using .musx still resulted in a crash. I've attached a file in case anyone else wishes to give it a try. (Note that it wouldn't allow me to attach a file without a file extension so I've added the .musx)

I opened it and saved it in Finale 26 - attached.

It opens for me in Finale 2005b and Finale 2014.5, so I suspect you have a problem. You might try this:

Thank you all for the great help. It's quite frustrating. I was able to open many of the old files in a very roundabout way. I noticed that when I changed the file extension to .musx and opened the file, it would still crash, but then Finale would automatically reboot and ask if I wanted to open the recovered file. At this point, I could then open the file and work with it, make changes, and save it as a new file in the updated format, and presumably continue working with the project. Unfortunately, now when I try to open the newly updated/saved versions, Finale just plain crashes without any sort of warning or pop-up. There has to be some other problem, because as far as Finale is concerned, they should be seen as new files, at least I think they should.

You might want to try resetting Finale's preferences:

Already suggested. Yes, it's time for that.

As a data point: the sample file opens for me in 27.3 without any problem.

Just adding to the others: It opened right away in 26.3 w/no problems (Windows 10 PC.) Hope you get it straightened out on your end!
