I recently learned how to place tempo numbers at the top of the score. I wonder if there is a similar function for controlling loudness for each staff that would place a number at a given staff to give that instrument a numbered loudness instead of being restricted to words like forte and piano.

I tried adding Base Key Velocity numbers but that didn’t work.

Thank you for your help.

Use the Mixer. The sliders control the key velocity.

I think what James wants is a marking that controls volume. This could be done with an expression and under the playback tab have a key velocity number. But frankly, N's suggestion of setting volumes with the mixer makes more sense. Players will respond better to the old fashioned forte and piano than numbers.

James,

Do you use the Mixer? If you are making sound files then the Mixer would give you much better volume fine-tuning than trying to set keyboard velocity numbers with an expression. But if you need how to do an expression, you can get answer here.

Where do you want these loudness numbers to appear? Where the standard dynamics usually appear? Above the staff? Below the staff? Somewhere else?

Using the mixer effects the entire staff. Good for balance. Using number or word or markings can be adjusted to a certain passage in the staff. You can create an expression in the Expression tool. Choose whatever number or word or whatever and assign a key velocity to it. Why the normal music terms is not satisfactory I have no idea but it is a simple task to create your own.

N. Grossingink,

Apparently, it is the velocity numbers that should be written. I would like them to written exactly where they can be written if they were Italian words like presto - either just above or just below the staff that they apply to.

I would like to know how too do that.

Thank you for your help.

Expression Tool > Double Click a spot > Create Expression > Insert number in text box > Click Playback Tab > Type: Key Velocity > Set to Value

Click on the MP (Expressions) tab. Clock on a measure. Click on the Dynamics tab. Click on Create Dynamic. Choose a number, let's say number 1 and type it into the box. Now click the Playback tab. Click the Type pull down menu. Select Key Velocity. Now you see a zero in the window change that to whatever "loudness" you desire. A low number like 1 is very soft and a high number like 127 is very loud. The values in between are more or less loud. You can also change the position under the Positioning tab.
