There is a "ghost" quarter-rest at the beginning of the attached
file, it is white. Probably in layer 2. How do I get rid of it? I've never
seen this before!

Yes, the hidden quarter rest is in Layer 2.
What, exactly, is the problem?
1) You do not want to see the hidden quarter rest on the computer screen?
With the plug-in Move Rests you can move the quarter rest way down below the bottom of the page.
2) You want to delete the rest - so that the dotted half is on beat 1?
From the Selection Tool you can double-click the rest, and delete it.

It's a hidden rest in Layer 2. It has to be there if you wnt the Layer 2 dotted half to appear on beat 2. Basic Finale stuff.

The white "ghost" rest does not appear on printout, only onscreen. I think what is happening is that in the "Hidden objects shading" as the value is decreased to zero it becomes white. As the value increases it becomes shaded. In each case it does not appear on paper. That was my main concern - that it would appear in print.

I'm guessing the staccato dot doesn't belong there.
I gave you an incomplete answer about hidden objects the other day. In addition to the "shading" setting, you can toggle hidden objects off and on from the View menu. I put the shading at 25 but keep the view off most of the time. If I want to check on the hidden things, I toggle the view rather than mess with the shading.

Regarding the staccato mark: I'm trying to indicate separation of notes rather than legato. What I'm trying to do is shown in the attachment, where ideally I'd like to combine measures 1 & 2 into one measure, as shown in meas.3. In meas.1 you have those notes played as a piano part. In meas.2 you have a sustained diad, played by, say strings. Problem is, meas.3 is cluttered, even though it represents my thought. All of this is part of a piano piece, no strings. My less-than-ideal solution is in meas. 4-5. I suspect my explanation might be confusing. Sorry. Any suggestions?
