I can't get the "Begin New Staff System" selection in "Measure Attributes" to work. It doesn't do anything. I've used this before, I have scores with this feature in them, but now it doesn't work. Any insights? Maybe there is some other parameter somewhere that has to be in a certain setting.

Here's what I have:
Reflow measures across systems (Maintain system locks)
Reflow systems across pages - checked
Automatic update layout - not checked
Automatic instrument family group brackets - checked
Automatic instrument family measures etc. - checked
Thoughts?

If I ever don't get the result I want from the Finale settings by defolt, I read the manual and then think about how to get the result I want in a roundabout way. And I usually succeed Why fight the program if you can trick it

Does it fail to start a new staff system in one score, or in every score? And if it's one score, is it one spot or every spot?
Can you post the score?

There is no need to de-select Automatic Update layout (unless your hardware runs very slowly).

Always leave Automatic Update Layout checked!
If you have multiple measure regions and you have unchecked "Include in Measure Numbering" for some measures, that can cause checking "Begin a New Staff System" to be applied to the wrong measure. Could that be what's going on? The work-around is to set Preferences/View/Display Actual Measure Numbers (instead of Display Defined Measure Numbers) long enough to make your setting.

It was the "automatic update layout" selection. Works now, thanks for the help.
There's nothing I was able to find in the Finale documentation that would have told me that.

Quoting the manual for my own version of Finale v27:KenBakerMN wrote: ↑Fri Jun 09, 2023 10:39 pm… There's nothing I was able to find in the Finale documentation that would have told me that.
“Update Layout. Choose this command to refresh the measure layout within each system, taking measure spacing changes into account, in order to create attractive, neatly justified systems with appropriate measure spacing in Page View. For the most part, this command is unnecessary; Finale regularly updates the layout automatically by default (see Automatic Update Layout under Preferences - Edit).”
Indeed the manual could be clearer about what the Update Layout command does.
And that is the reason why it is always a good idea to consider help from the forum.
By The Way:
If you hold down Shift, the command changes to
Update Layout and Remove Measure Groupings
- where {Remove Measure Groupings} will Unlock Systems.
