Problem to write arpeggio symbols
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I use Finale version 27 for Mac. When I try to write an arpeggio symbol, it's hard to keep it upright. I use the symbol I find in the Shapes menu. Am I looking in the wrong menu?

The articulation is easier to add if you use a "single wiggle" symbol instead of Finale's double wiggle:
the single wiggle matches the note height while the double wiggle is often too large.
As described here:

Here's the thread I was thinking of:

I think the useful thing I discovered was that with a metatool, click on the bottom note of the arpeggio and Finale will place the top of the articulation correctly, then you need only adjust the bottom. I think I had to change the handle offsets in the definition.

Is there any way to elegantly space the arpeggio symbol with surrounding encroaching notes (and rests)? I have been using the --> Edit Beat Chart to move things around for the occasional arpeggio, but I have a jazz chart where the guitar and piano have many arpeggios and it asks for a simpler process. Here are two examples. In #1, there are a few eighth rests hiding behind the arpeggio symbols.

If you have Document options/Music spacing/Avoid collision of articulations checked, then you should be able to move the arpeggio when required if there's an accidental, then just respace. No need to use the tedious beat chart.
Here are two arpeggio articulations I use. The first one is for normal notes, the second is one to use if there is a flat or sharp. You may need to tweak anyway, but these will get you closer. Assign each to a metatool, then click on the bottom note of your chord. It will place the arpeggio vertically correctly on the top note (curiously), and you'll then need to adjust the bottom handle. As I said, after applying them, respace.

Thank you Motet for your teaching. I did discover the Document Options/Avoid Collision of articulations and checked this box and checked it as well as chords and all note heads without resolving the arpeggio over accidentals or crowding the prior notes. I duplicated the arpeggio symbol and created two additional arpeggio articulations just as you described. I am not familiar with the "60e" way of entering a number, so I typed exactly what was in your post. In my Finale 27.4 (Windows) version, they were converted to a pure number. Can you comment on how to use this entry process?
Description of photos in order:
Here is the starting situation: Here's your first set of handle positions no accidentals: Here's your second set of handle positions for accidentals: It looks like your first example will work for me with or without accidentals.
Another question, the arpeggio still crowds the prior notes in busy measures. Is there a way of increasing the default spacing on the left side of the symbol?
Again, great teaching and thank you.

The "e" stands for EVPUs, Finale's smallest unit of measurement. If you units are set to inches or centimeters, for example, it will convert them to that.
Your arpeggios look too far from the notes to me. Did you check "Center horizontally"? Did you apply them with a metatool?

I did check center horizontally. See screenshot.
Repeated the process setting Document Options to EVUs, created 2 new arpeggio articulations using your numbers and reassigned them using the meta tool process to the appropriate half note sets, with and without accidentals showing the following results:
I did not readjust placement just to show where the numeric results occurred. My handle numbers insist on staying fractional, I could not get them to stay in EVUs. I set the EVU for this document in Document Options.
Thoughts? Does it still look too far based on your expectations or is this what should have happened? Did I miss something? Thanks,Finale 26.3.1.520; Win 10; GPO5
