please help. 8vb is not working.
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hello,
I just recently upgraded to the full version of finale 2012. I was previously using finale allegro. I am having trouble creating an 8vb marking now. I am selecting the 8va/8vb tool from the smart shape window, and if I am not mistaken, I should be able to create the 8vb marking by double clicking and dragging it below the staff. Unfortunately, it appears as an 8va marking even when I drag it below the staff. At the end of the dotted line, the bracket points upward indicating it is affecting the correct staff though. The 8va markings aren't working in the playbacks either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am unable to reproduce your problem.
The 8vb seems to be working correctly in my own copy of Finale 2012a, both in layout and playback.
See the attached Finale 2012 document.

Did you try an Update Layout?

Did you try an Update Layout?
Did you open the Finale 2012 document I attached?
Could you attach a short Finale 2012 .mus document that shows the problem?
Before you can upload a .mus document to this forum, you must compress it, e. g. as a.zip file.
The file size must not be more than max. 100 KB.

I tried an Update Layout. The document that you attached showed the 8vb marking and I was able to create an 8vb marking in that file. Here is a file that I created showing the problem. This file is reading the 8vb in the playback though. Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem in Finale 2012a. I opened a Default file (no Wizzard) several times, and I can't create a 8vb under the staff the way I can in Finale 2011.
This should be reported to Support on their web site.

Whether the {octave down} below a staff should be notated as "8va" or as "8vb", is a document setting.
Some engravers consider the "8vb" to be incorrect, and use "8va" below a staff.
In the document you attached, the symbol chosen for {octave down} is "8va".
Fortunately you can easily change it:
Smart Shape Tool.
Smart Shape menu > Smart Shape Options…
In the pop up menu Symbols, choose "Octave Down (8va)", and click the button "Select…".
In the Symbol Selection, choose #215.

All clear, thanks Peter. Obviously the default option has been changed.

This thread is now over 6 years old, but even as an experienced veteran with notation programs, I had trouble figuring this out
Yes, this is 2019 and I have the latest version
the problem? Finale's online manual says this
The 8va and 8vb markings, when placed above the staff, indicate the music is to be performed one octave or two octaves higher than written, respectively. According to most recognized music notation standards, and placed below the staff indicate the music is to be performed one or two octaves lower than written. Note the marking 8vb , a copyist shorthand, is also sometimes used below the staff to indicate the music is to be performed an octave lower than written.
In other words, the manual tells you 8vb is sometimes used, but gives no clue as to how to get it. In a paragraph that's supposed to tell you how to get 8vb (instead of the default 8va
First off, Sibelius has an 8vb tool, so you don't have to deep dive to get it
Secondly
FInale PLEASE update your manual! This is not an advanced notation issue, it's a beginner's issue

That may be the case, but, as I said in another thread, I can't do it. Note that in my SmartShape options, both octave up and octave down show as 8va.
This is in the default document.

That's just the menu label, which is not dynamic. Click the Select... button and you should be able to change it to whatever you want. The menu label will stay the same, though. Did you try changing the character and applying it beneath the staff?

I can't get it to work either and the solution seems simple but I don't have a SmartShape menu. Is there another way to make it work in Finale Printmusic?

A follow-up on Peter's earlier post -- 8va below the staff doesn't make sense if you think of it as "octave above"; however, 8va is an abbreviation for "ottava" so putting 8va below the staff means octave below. Ditto for 15ma, abbreviation for "quindicesima". But 8vb and 15mb are in common usage and wouldn't confuse anyone.
