extra line appears when tying notes

Post by dtobones » Wed Mar 26, 2014 5:10 am

Hi there,

I'm using Finale 2007 with Windows 7.

The problem - When I tie notes, a staff line appears adjacent to the tie and across to the edge of the page.

Sometimes it appears on the printed page but at the moment no.

It creates a mess on my chart and the only way I can work around it is to delete the tie and add a Smart Shape slur.

Also, it doesn't matter how I apply the tie - simple entry or speedy.

I've searched this issue and haven't found any references to it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks much

Welcome to the forum!

Based on your description I suspect that the "staff line" is a word extension.

Are you using the Lyrics Tool in this particular document?

What are your document settings for word extensions?

Please post the file, so we can have a look at it. In order to post a file on this forum, it must be compressed (zipped) and the total size must be under 100KB.

Hi again,

Thanks for the advice regarding checking the Lyric Tool and uploading the file.

I'm not using lyrics in this chart but looked at my settings and unchecked some things to see if it would make a difference.

There was no improvement so I've uploaded a file as miker suggested that should show the lines extending from the ties. Its best seen in Page View.

David,

I opened your document in Finale 2011.
While I can see that there are some ties in the document, I do not see any lines that appear "adjacent to the tie and across to the edge of the page".

I tried to add some tied notes, but I was not able to reproduce your problem - perhaps because I opened your document in a later Finale version (2011).

However, here is something else to try (couldn't hurt):
Run the utilities "Check Ties" and "Check Accidentals".
NB:
The order is important.
Run "Check Ties" before you run "Check Accidentals".

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your looking at my file.

I tried your suggestion using the Check Ties and Check Accidental utilities (in that order) and all that resulted was one line becoming shorter and another getting longer.

In the end its back to the way it was with lines extending from the ties.

I know there are some other glitches related to Finale 2007 interfacing with Windows 7. Perhaps this is related to that also.

I don't see them either. Sorry.

Try downloading the demo of a more recent product, and see if they are gone. Finale 2014, NotePad and SongWriter 2012, and PrintMusic 2011 are all available as free demos. That would at least let you know if it is, in fact, a compatibility issue.

Sounds good miker.

I'll have a look at a newer version and probably end up buying it. Its about time I guess!

I've experienced the same problem using Finale 2011 and 2012. It happens off and on, and it's been a problem for me for a few years in various pieces. It does indeed appear to be a word extension that appears on one page and extends back to an earlier spot in the piece, sometimes for several pages. When I display those pages starting from the beginning of the piece it does not appear. But once I get to the problematic spot, then the line appears in my display (and printing) from that moment on until I shut down and re-open the document. It seems to happen when there are multiple verses of lyrics on a page and a word extension carries onto a succeeding system.

One workaround is to delete all the offending word extensions in the vicinity and add them back one-by-one. Then remove the offending one and add a dummy syllable where the word extension should go, e.g. an X with font style "hidden" so it appears grayed out and doesn't print. then try dragging the word extension over that space to fill up until the end of the system. do not try to carry it over to the note on the next system. This gives you a word extension where needed up to the end of the system. On the following system, create a dummy syllable with an Option-Space followed by a space. Then that word extension should function correctly on the second system.
