playing only on repeat -- possible???
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I want to avoid writing out music a second time when in the repeat the only difference is that one part is tacet the first time and plays the second time. Can I do this? I don't see anything that seems relevant.
I have four parts, three of which play the first time, and they all play the second time. I can write note in the part to make this clear to the instrumentalist, but have no idea how to make it happen in Fin playback.

I went through this a couple of years back. If you're talking strictly about playback, sorry, but I think you may be out of luck. If you're planning purely on producing sheet music, then the old note "play only..." on the appropriate staff should suffice.
My workaround has become to create TWO versions. One clean, for printing, and a second, marked-up copy for playback. For me, the playback starts with "save as" and a new version number to keep the two separated.

I do the same thing. One copy for print, with appropriate notes, and one for playback.
You could do it with hidden expressions, but IMHO that's more trouble than it's worth.

Here is a short demo with hidden expressions.

Hi, Peter!
Thanks, that works very well, and is very easy to set up.
Defined the expressions (took me a couple minutes to discover how you did it, but then it was quite simple) and then just plopped them down in each section, and the whole thing works flawlessly. And don't have to rewrite the music.
Thanks for the info!

Hi jwocrc,
In the document I attached, I used “Play Finale Through MIDI”.
And the expressions use Controller 11.
If you play Finale through audio units (VST), then the Controller 11 trick does not work.
Instead, assign a pass to an unused channel. Then, change it back.

Finale is a WOW very robust program. You can do anything, it seems.
But sometimes you have to really dig to figure out how to do it.
Thanks again for that simple work-around. I've used it about ten times just today!
