I'm trying to add AAA accordion chord notation. I want to enter the chord suffix without the root (i.e., M for major), but when I enter and "M", it changes to "F" and "m" changes to "f". It will let me enter "7". What am I doing wrong?

Using Finale 2014.5 and WIndows 10

Welcome to the forum!

For the AAA notation I would not use the Chord Tool, but rather the Articulation Tool.

If you set up the four articulations - M, m, 7, and d - with metatools, then the symbol entry can be done quite quickly.

But if you must use the Chord Tool, try this:

1) Create the four symbols - M, m, 7, and d - as four chord suffixes.

2) Enter the chord symbols WITH root:
DM rather than just M
Dm rather than just m
D7 rather than just 7
Dd rather than just d

3) When you are done entering all the chord symbols, use the utility to hide the chord roots:
Utilities menu > Change > Chords…

I do this all the time. You SHOULD use the chord entry, but you have to get into each chord after you enter it hide the root. So, for example, for an F major chord you will enter FM, then in the chord dialogue box you will uncheck "show root". that will leave you with "M". The same for minor and dominant 7th. Diminished is a little more tricky, but it can be done. Let me know if you are interested in the rest.

When I try to hide the root, it doesn't hide! An additional handle appears above the "FM". When I go back to the dialogue box, "show root" is still checked.

I just tried it, and it works for me on a Mac. Enter the chords as Peter suggests. Then, select the measure and Utilities > Change > Chords...> and uncheck Root in "Items to Display.

In Finale 2014.5, ensure chord auto-correct is off for accurate notation. Seek Finale support if needed. Happy composing!
