Greetings!
In terms of readability, which of the 3 possibilities in the attached file is the better beaming choice?
Thanks!

"A" looks clearest to me.

I prefer A or B. I like B best, possibly because it was the way I have seen these patterns engraved for so long. It conveys the meaning without the business of breaking the secondary beam as A (quite correctly) does.

Yet another variation on the readability theme:

I prefer A over B; C is a non-starter, but I think everyone seems to agree on that.
However, just to throw another idea in the mix, depending on what sort of ensemble I was writing for, I would give consideration to replacing the middle note of each group with a staccato eighth note, thereby improving readability by removing the rest altogether ... probably not everyone's cup of tea.

Thank you all for these votes – very interesting! So far, B is the clear winner with 4 votes.
Perhaps I should now divulge that A is Finale’s default setting; B is from Breitkopf & Härtel and C comes from Bärenreiter. Certainly interesting that C gets no votes so far, despite the high regard for that firm's scores!
OCTO suggested I post the same question on the NOTATIO website, so I await further votes there.

Another variation of B, with mini-stems :

What's the piece? C might make sense if the tempo is slow enough to be beat in eighths.Andreo Basisto wrote:C comes from Bärenreiter. Certainly interesting that C gets no votes so far, despite the high regard for that firm's scores!

It's the 2nd corno di bassetto part from Mozart's Gran Partita - Adagio. Most probably will be beat in 8. I'm tasked with transposing the parts for alto clarinet as we're lacking corni di bassetto players in deepest rural Lincolnshire!

In that case I would have a look at the other parts (e.g. Oboe 2) and do the same beaming as in these parts.Andreo Basisto wrote:It's the 2nd corno di bassetto part from Mozart's Gran Partita - Adagio.
