The smart line tool is really for horizontal lines, and the hooks normally are vertical so I don't know about that, but I agree with Ron that the notation is not necessary, unless for pedagogical purposes.

If you make a custom smart shape, you can have a vertical line with horizontal hooks. Just don't choose the option "make horizontal". Pressing Shift before drawing the shape will constrain it to perfectly vertical.

I agree that "non div." is better than all those hooks.

Here is an interesting example of double-stop brackets in the 1st movement of Brahms' 4th Symphony http://notat.io/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=237

Jose,

First, you need to get into the Custom Smart Line screen. You click on that funny looking shape in the Smart Shape Palette, while holding down the ALT key (I think. It's the OPT key on Mac.)
custom_line.png
custom_line.png (11.38 KiB) Viewed 19069 times
You will get to a screen that shows all of the available shapes. Scroll down, until you come to the straight line with a hook on both ends. (I would) duplicate it, and choose Edit... In the next screen, unclick Horizontal, and OK.

To use that shape, select it, and treat it just like any other line: double click at the start point, holding the mouse button down on the second click, and drag. If you drag at an angle, the line will be at an angle, but if you hold the SHIFT key down while you drag, the line will stay vertical.

How do I duplicate it?

I went to the Smart Line Selection with CRTL + Custom Line Tool.
Then

1/ I choose the line of horizontal bracket

2) Duplicate

3) Edit

4) Uncheck "horizontal

5) OK

Then I don't know going on

Jose,

Your hooks on the ends of the vertical line are also vertical, and are being overlaid by the line, so you don't see them. They are there though. I'm not sure how to make them horizontal like you want. I'm looking into it. Maybe someone smarter than me on this stuff will chime in.

You went back to the preset selection of lines in the palette. You need to click on the one you edited, in the smart shape selection box, and click Select. Then draw your line. Editing a line, or creating a new one, does not put it into the preset selection.

To get there you need to Ctrl-click the bizarre asterisk in a hexagon. Draw it bottom to top to get the hooks in the right direction.

Next you're faced with not enough room between the notes for the bracket.

The single thin line in the file has vertical hooks that cannot be adjusted. I still don't know how that line was entered. However, selecting the last custom line in the list and double-click dragging, either horizontal or vertical, will place a thick line in the document with three handles, each of which can be moved in four ways. A little manipulation and you can get the desired bracket from a horizontal entry. A vertical entry avoids this step. The hooks themselves seem to be always at 90 degrees to the line. This is not the case with the original thin line where the hooks always remain vertical. I'm still a little confused by all this.

The difference in the hooks is apparently the "Horizontal" setting in the definition, I learn.

The OP has made many copies of the hooked line. Only one is needed.

Has anybody been following my directions? It worked fine for me, the first time.

Is there something you need to change?

Your instructions seem fine to me, but are evidently causing confusion to the O.P. Perhaps it's not clear that one need only do the duplication, etc., once. And you need to use the custom line each time.

Entering a new line presents no problem, just as your directions suggested. I was trying to edit the line that Jose had already entered into his sample document. AFAICT, it cannot be modified for horizontal hooks. The hooks always remain vertical. I am not sure which line he chose to enter into the document. As motet says, there are multiple "duplicate" lines at the end of the custom line selection dialog box.

What the OP chose was the double ended bracket, instead of the custom line that was created. That stock bracket is meant for horizontal use. When Horizontal is de-selected, and the line made vertical, the hooks line up with the line itself. This hard wired bracket has the ability to have the hooks remain perpendicular to the staff even when slanted. I don't think it was intended to be used as a vertical bracket.
