Hi, Im experimenting this issues both on mac and windows, and not on all but on some of my projects.
Im writting drum grooves, sometimes I use lyrics to add hand stickings to the rhythms.
All is good for some pages on my project, but then after certain page is reached (lets say page 7) If I want to add more lyrics finale crashes.
This happens with all chorus-verse-section lyrics.
If I try to add lyric to pages 1 to 6, all works fine.
page 7 and more... crashes.
I think maybe it has something to be with fonts, but all my lyric fonts are available on my system....
I would appreciate any help on this.
thanks

Is this with just one file, then it is easier to diagnose. is this with all files?

Okay. There's either file corruption, or a setting. Maybe we need to see the file to figure this out. Otherwise, we're just guessing.

Have you tried deleting the lyrics and starting over?

You might have to start over. If you want us to look at the file, we can do that.

You might want to take a clean template, if there is one, and copy the entries from the misbehaving file in. It's worth a try anyway.

Is it both Mac and Windows? Which OS and version?

I understand. However, unless copying to a clean file works, starting over might be the only option. As it stands, you're at an impasse anyway, so it may be that options are limited.

I'm wondering if folks had any success with fixing these issues? I'm studying theory on my own, and rather than writing staves in my notes, I'm trying to create examples with Finale to just paste into my notebook. I'm trying to add bass position symbols on a lower lyric line. I switch the lyric line from the first line to the third line. Then, with the lyric setting on "Type Into Score", I click on the note where I'd like to paste the lyric, and everything freezes. I have to Force Quit and restart. I've created a new document, copied all measure information, pasted it into the new document, and then I have the same issue when I try to add the lyrics. It's inordinately frustrating. For the price paid for this software, starting over is not an acceptable option. Especially since I had to PAY for 2014.5 because MakeMusic issued NO warning about the Finale 2014/El Capitan (or Yosemite - I don't remember) incompatibility. I upgraded the Mac OS and could no longer use Finale 2014 because I couldn't downgrade the Mac OS, and MakeMusic finally came out and said they'd offer NO support.

If anyone takes a look at the file, the place where I'm clicking to add the lyric is m. 23, beat 3, bass line.

I tried your attached file and the same thing happened to me - Finale locked up and I had to force quit. I notice you're using the Finale Lyrics font. I changed the font to Times New Roman plain and had the same problem. I changed the font to Times plain and no problems. See the attached file. I think Finale Lyrics is actually the Times typeface, so it should look the same or similar.

You say you owned Finale 2014 but had to pay for 2014.5. That shouldn't have been necessary because Finale 2014.5 was a free upgrade to 2014. If you paid twice, ask them for a refund on one of the payments.

We never had enough information.

Apple finally enforced certain changes to the OS that made 2014 incompatible. MM posted and emailed regular updates on that. As has been pointed out, 2014.5 was a no-charge upgrade to 2014. If you were running 2011 or 2012 on a Mac, you were in for problems.

I don't let MM off the hook, however. 2014 as first announced was to be 64bit (remember? that's why there was no 2013) but, when released, was still 32 bit and still making calls that were contrary to the Apple Toolkit. This bit them in the butt when a later OS was released that no longer allowed these calls to be made. As it was, 25 was the 64bit release and is still experiencing some growing pains.

Same problem for me today with Finale 25 on Mac. Never had it before in years of previous Finale versions. Switching to Times font did not solve the problem.

Basically, either click assignment or type into score results in an endlessly spinning beachball. This happens with verse 2 or 3, not 1 or 4. I've reset preferences and have started with a fresh, wizard-created document. I've also emptied the Lyrics window (deleting any text or spaces) and run data check for file maintenance and font check. But when I paste in the music from the existing, problematic file, the problem recurs. Other, previous files do not have this issue.

So it seems specific to the document. Sometimes on quitting Finale, I get the message that it quit unexpectedly. But not always. Any thoughts?

thanks, chris hoh

We would need to see the file. When I'm putting in lyrics for Anglican or simplified chant, I need to highlight all measures, go into the measure attributes menu item, an uncheck the box for Break Smart Word Extensions.

More than being specific to the document, it seems specific to the notation (if pasting the music into a new document still crashes).

I would look for any inconsistencies in the notation. Also, have you got any Custom Smart Shapes? Custom Repeats? If you remove everything except the notes, do you still get the crash when adding the lyrics? (Make a copy as it is, so you can copy back the extra bits afterwards.)

Thanks, everyone. I think BuonTempi was right, it was something in the notation. I tried exporting all the music into XML, then importing it into a new document, and pasting that into my problem file after deleting all the lyrics in the lyrics window. That solved the problem and preserved my page layout. I do wonder if there was a problem in the word extension function of the corrupted file, since at one point in the lyric options, the word extension minimum length showed up as zero, not a setting I entered. While I hope no one else has this problem of freezes with lyric editing, maybe my experience will help you get out of it. chris hoh
