Independent Staves for Formatting

Hey everyone I'm having the biggest brain fart over here.

How to you enable your staves to work independently to where if I were to adjust one staff, the same staff is not effected within other systems. When you activate it, a little symbol appears on the top right hand corner of every system (I've attached a picture of that symbol.) How to I activate that symbol and create independent staves?

I'm using Finale 2010

Thanks!

I forget when things were changed from "Optimizing" to the current system. The current default is that dragging a staff handle in the System tool only affects the one system, so maybe you need to "optimize" from the Page Layout tool menu. Be sure to study the options--you may not want to remove empty staves, for example.

In 2010, it still used the old system called optimization. You can optimize the whole score at once, or system by system. If, in the Page Layout Tool, you choose the handle for a certain system, you can choose to optimize just that system. Frankly, I don't recall the wording of the item in the menu. Sorry.

I found it: Allow Individual Staff Spacing. This is located in the context menu when selecting only one system. This optimizes only the current system. I would lock systems first, or you might find some unexpected behavior.

Ah yes! Thank you everyone.

Page Layout-->Optimize Staff Systems-->Deselect "Remove empty staves"-->Select "All systems of current part/score"

Happy Composing!
