Space Systems Vertically
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I can't for the life of me figure out how to space systems in an orchestral score vertically. The score is a standard orchestral score. Currently the score goes down a just a little over half way down. I'd like the staves to be equally spaced within a section with a slight bit more space between the sections - just standard stuff.
I managed to do this for the first page by doing it manually, but it would certainly be a lot of work to do this for every page. I Googled this and searched the manual and can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by a "standard orchestral score", instrumentation wise? It might help to see a PDF of one page of the full instrumentation. Also, what size paper do you have the page size set to? You need to provide as much information as possible to get good suggestions.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I mean standard instrumentation. I tried attaching a pdf and that didn't work. Then I created a URL and I got a message saying I can't post a URL. agarnermusic/race.pdf. Maybe without the .com it will work. Just put dot com after agarnermusic.
Thanks,
Aaron

Aaron,

Thank you, thank you and thank you. Man you are a life saver. I tried figuring this out from the manual and Googling.
I used the "Replace Staves" option by increasing the "Space Between Each Staff" box and it worked. I couldn't figure out the double-clicking method. Sorry for not getting something that's probably obvious. What do I double-click on? I double-clicked on the little box in the lower right-hand corner and that didn't do it.
Thanks,
Aaron

My mistake--it's in the Staff tool, not the Page Layout tool. It's the handle just to the left of the clef on the top line of each staff. With nothing selected, if you click-drag, it moves the staff only in that system, but if you double-click-drag (double click, hold down the button on the second click) it moves it in every system. You can also make a selection first and it will move all selected with just a single click-drag.

You can also make precise numerical adjustments (so that, for instance, all the staves in one section are spaced exactly equidistantly) in scroll view using the Staff Tool under "Staff Usage..." Then back in Page View you can select "Respace Staves..." (still in the Staff Tool) and select "Set to Scroll View Spacing" to apply the new settings to all pages.

Instead of double clicking it is perhaps easier to single click (in staff tool) in front of the stave you would like to move. That will select the stave throughout the document and thus will move the stave (by dragging with mouse or nudging with keyboard) on every page.

there is also a plugin that will help with this. it works best if there are no grand-staff instruments with cross-staff notes in them (like a harp part or a piano part).
