This is a solved problem, but I'm curious about the cause.

Setting up 25.3, I built a new default template and loaded my trusty old Chord Suffix Library (which dates from 1999). Working on the first lead sheet, I entered a chord and saw that the suffix font was wrong. Looking under the hood, I discovered that my Times New Roman 10 Bold had changed to Helvetica 11 Bold. (Bonus fact: Helvetica is not installed on my machine.)

Deleted all of the suffixes, opened 2014.5, saved the library from there, installed it into 25.3, crossed my fingers, and happily, everything was as it should be.

Wondering if 25.3 objected to my musty library, or some other hiccup occurred. Any inspirations? Thanks!

I'd say you're lucky that the fix was so simple. Older libraries often give up the ghost a lot sooner.

You say Helvetica is not installed on your machine. I've always thought that for both Mac and Windows, Helvetica was one of the required system fonts. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well, maybe it wasn't originally. Most Adobe products include Helvetica as do many other applications. Depends on the product whether or not the entire font family is installed. They will also install with demos.

For the curious, here's the list of fonts installed with Windows and the versions where they first appeared. Helvetica is not on that list.

and the Mac (three Helvetica fonts are included in the Mac OS)

Many applications install "hidden" fonts, designed for use only by the app and not the system. A quick Google search of Helvetica and Windows reveals how to find them and install for use by all apps.

On the Mac, you see this a lot. Many apps store fonts in the resources folder contained within the app including Finale. This can sometimes cause problems when the installer doesn't overwrite the old versions. I first discovered this in Encore and then fixed Finale by trashing all the versions in Font Book.app and reinstalling from the resources folder—fixed a lot of problems for me.

Here's an article on where to find some interesting fonts that Apple installs in certain apps.

After reading it, I reinstalled iDVD from iLife '11. It doesn't work anymore but I was able to find and install the fonts from it before trashing the app again.

I think Arial and MS Sans are very close to Helvetica, which I think is omitted from Windows for financial reasons.

Helvetica isn't listed among the fonts in the Control Panel. If it's "hidden," how would I unveil it?
