Two Live Videos for Improving Your Finale Workflow

Postby elbsound » Fri Aug 18, 2017 2:42 pm

I have added two short Finale live screencam videos to my webpage that hopefully inspire you to use shortcuts and other 3rd party tools in your Finale workflow.

1.) Estrella (Schumann) - a full piano page created in in 10 minutes from scratch
http://elbsound.studio/estrella.php
Live video on creating the score: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6NJNoN5SuI
Finale's output after 10 minutes:

2.) Tristan's Test Score - a full orchestra page created in 21 minutes from scratch

All 3rd party tools and plugins that were used are described or linked on these pages.
You will also find the PDF, Finale and font files there.
The Finale files require the free fonts HayFIN, Gonville, GnvilFIN, Old Standard TT and TexGyre Schola to be installed.

Jan, thank you for posting the links to your website. Very interesting information and approaches to using Finale. You're doing some interesting work on Finale productivity. I'm looking forward to when your plugins will be available for Mac.

Cheers,

Yes, these are very interesting to watch. I am interested in the Perfect Layout plug-in as well.

Since Jan uses QWERTY input, I suspect I could beat or at least equal him on the Estrella piece using MIDI input, since there are very few layout problems. Maybe I'll time myself. The trick is exploiting the fact that the piece so formulaic, and thus lends itself to copy and paste.

Yes, motet, I would be very interested to see fast how the MIDI input goes.
Under "possible optimizations" I already wrote on the Estrella page that MIDI input might be faster in this case. But as I only rarely use it, it would probably have taken me longer to set it up than to make this video ;-)
If you do it, I would also be interested in how long it took you to setup / fine-tune the MIDI input (e.g. enharmonic settings or even quantization if you use HyperScribe).

>since there are very few layout problems.
Don't underestimate the spacing of unisons and multi-layer entries in the left hand here (also with ledger line and accidental collisions). It is a very tight spacing. And this in combination with the straightforward three quarters rhythm in the right hand. Very many measures are affected here and are not handled very well by Finale's default spacing algorithm.
I have posted more on this topic here: http://notat.io/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=325

I certainly couldn't make the nice-looking unisons in 10 minutes! I was just speaking of getting everything input and looking decent--no collisions. Your plug-in certainly is a wonder.
