I always write for piano using the standard Grand staff. I cannot figure out how to make a system with 3 clefs. One G clef and two F clefs. I'm sure it is a simple process but not for me.

Create a grand staff with the setup wizard, then go to the staff tool, select the top staff and pick New Blank Staves from the menu. After adding it. go to Group and Bracket/Edit, and adjust the range of staves to include the new one.

1) With the Staff Tool you can add the extra staff below the piano Grand Staff.

2) Also, with the Staff Tool you can edit the staff group bracket.
I suppose that you need the bracket to include all three staves.

3) You can set the playback instrument in the ScoreManager’s chiclet {Instrument List}.
Also, in the {Instrument List} you can change the clef for the extra staff.

How do I extend the bar line down from the two upper clefs so that it is connected through all 3 clefs?

Via Peter's 2) above. In Group Attributes choose Draw Barlines: Through Staves for the newly created three stave group.

You need to add the staves for the entire document, and hide them where not needed.

Make sure that the Group Attributes are set to allow hiding for the group. (When Hiding Empty : Hide Normally).

Staff Tool. Select the appropriate systems. Staff menu : Hide Empty Staves (they must be really empty !).

that doesn't work. I tried doing exactly what you said and it won't work. You say the staves must be totally empty...the only thing in the measures are whole rests.

If they are whole rests entered manually, the measures are not considered empty.
Try also selecting just the staff you wish to hide.
Another method is to apply a staff style via the Staff menu : Hide Staff (Collapse).
Also, remember what Buontempi wrote :
Make sure that the Group Attributes are set to allow hiding for the group. (When Hiding Empty : Hide Normally).

michelp, you are living in the past! :-) Finale will now hide staves with real whole rests. I suspect it is in fact the group attribute "when hiding staves, hide normally." If you start with a grand staff from the set-up wizard, it will instead be set to "only hide when all staves empty".

You are right, and I knew it, the problem being that I use several versions of Finale...Thanks for the reminder.
We agree on the group parameters (Hide Normally).

Interesting that BuonTempi gave this instruction (to choose Hide Normally) a few posts back. I am guessing that the OP didn't read that.
