ppp dynamic

Postby Hector Pascal » Sat Feb 03, 2018 1:20 am

Hi all,

In my piece, I often have pp and ppp dynamics at the first note of bars full of semiquavers.

What is the best way to stop these longer dynamics from hitting the bar line on the left, yet still be accurately positioned under first note? Is it common practice to add space to the beginning of bars every time this occurs throughout a score?

Cheers and thanks,
Hector Pascal.

Usually you would shift the dynamics slightly to the right.
If this leads to a collision on the right, for example if there is another dynamic on beat 2, Gould suggests (p.103) to make a break in the barline, i.e. a dynamic with opaque background.

In my Perfect Layout plugin project the first approach is implemented ("shift to the right if collision with barline"), see measures 54-56:

Jan, I've been awaiting the release of your plug-in for a while, as I'm sure are many others.
Do you have any news as to when that might be?
