I'm charting some spanish music. Some of the original charts have words that are sung and tied together like my attached photo.

How does one do this in Finale?

You can insert a symbol in the word, (in the text menu) if you can find a symbol that you want to use or you can insert a 'hard' hyphen.

Thanks. I was unaware of that feature. That worked.

What you are looking for is the elision. It was added to the Finale Lyric font a while back, but I don't remember if it was in 2014.5. I think so.

Enter the first two letters, and go to Text > Insert Symbol > and look in slot 291. Select that, and then enter the last two letters.

I use the Finale Lyrics font, and what I do is enter a symbol I don't need for every spot where I need the elision. I then replace them all at once with the elision symbol (using Text Search and Replace). Saves a lot of time.

Yes, the elision is correct, just as it is in Italian where it is used all the time.

The manual shows two ways to do it, with and without the under-tie elision symbol.
https://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/Fin ... ht=elision

In English, I do the first method without the symbol. In Italian and Spanish, I use the symbol.

Other apps including Overture have ways to add them automatically as I type. I then use MusicXML to send them to Finale.

I’ve asked that the elision be added to the Text > Insert... menu, along with hard space and hard hyphen (which isn’t one, but still...)

Dredging up an old topic here after a google; i'm trying to do the same as the OP.

I can insert the elision character either via text->insert symbol, or the keyboard shortcut, but the elision appears *above* the bottom of the characters, like the asterisk I added to above, rather than below the characters, as it shows in the above pictures.

Is there a way to adjust the vertical height of a single synbol within a syllable? I can adjust syllables easily, but this is a bit different.

Thanks!

Geoff,

I suppose that you are following Mike’s instructions, and are using character #291 - right?

Instead, try character #297.
