Hi all,
When slurring a little ascending motif (for a single reed instrument) which is marked Mezzo legato, would I be correct to use the dotted slur, rather than the solid line slur? It looks fairly good to me, but thought I'd ask the forum.
Cheers,
HP.

I'm not a wind player, but for me the dotted slur is an editorial addition. I would use a regular slur and mark it mezzo legato.
But that's just my 2¢.

Unless you are editing another's work and making a suggestion, no.

Thanks for the input. Further to N's suggestion with the staccato under slurs, I have also seen tenuti under slurs, which I think is a sort of soft tonguing.
I am persuaded to use normal slurs and the Mezzo legato indication, however there are patches of normal legato and patches of mezzo legato, so I suspect that the dotted lines would serve the eye well. Although, I take the point of them being editorial. Decisions, decisions...

Are you writing music to please your eye or for musicians who are expected to play it?

I think the dotted slurs would be misunderstood. I like the dots under slurs suggestion. I think legato lines under slurs imply a slight emphasis to each note, played as legato as possible.
