How can I insert font symbols with Mac Sierra?
For example, I want to use the Opus Percussion Font to insert a symbol, while creating a new expression.

In older Mac versions, I could use character viewer to find the symbol I want to use and simply click on it. I've tried using the new Emoji and Symbol viewer window, but I cannot find the Opus Percussion font there. But Opus Percussion Font does appear in Font Book, but copying and pasting the symbol I want does not work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The easiest way would be to use something like PopChars.

http://www.ergonis.com/products/popcharx/

Or, you could use Text menu > Insert > Symbols.

Thanks for the quick reply maker.

I tried using PopChar but it only inserts a question mark, instead of the symbol I want (Opus percussion Glyph 5 U+FOD2).

With insert symbol, I'm not able find the symbol I'm looking for.

Maybe Opus Percussion does not work with Finale with a Mac running Sierra?

Thanks again!

I'm running High Sierra and F25. This worked fine.

Are you choosing the correct font in the Create Expression window?

Thanks again Miker.

I found that I can use Mac's FontBook to insert symbols from Fonts. For example, I opened Font Book, when to Toccata Font, chose a symbol, copied it, then inserted it while creating a new expression.

BUT, this does not work with the Opus Percussion font. When I do this, I get the box with a question mark in the middle.

Right now, I'm looking to insert Glyph 5 U+FO2D from the Opus Percussion Font. It's a percussion symbol, looks like a circle with and arrow at the top.

But later I will need to use many other symbols of this font, so hopefully I can get this to work.

Thanks again!

AHA! You are choosing from the Private Use area. As I understand it, those are the same characters, but for Windows.

You can find the one you want at slot 201C. The Mac keystroke is ⌥-[

The shortcut is -, the hyphen.

Here is a visual font map that may help. The Opus Percussion font I'm using is a "dfont" dated 2009. If yours is older, that may be a problem.

Hi again Miker,

Yes, that last symbol is the one I'm looking for. The hyphen shortcut doesn't work. In fact, no key combinations work. All I get is the boxes with question marks in them.

The Opus Percussion font file I'm using is copyright 1987-2007, so maybe it is out of date.

I'm making parts for somebody, they sent me a Finale file created in Windows, using the Opus Percussion font with that file, and they also sent me the Opus Percussion font file.

Do you know where/how I can get an updated version of Opus Percussion that is going to work for me?

Thanks again

The font Opus Percussion is a Sibelius font.

Have you tried the free trial version of Sibelius?
I would suspect that the trial version’s installer also installs the Sibelius fonts.

You might have been sent a Windows font - that won't work. I'll attach my Mac font - as far as I can tell it works (Sierra/Finale 2012).

That's how I got it. Just install the demo, and even when you trash the demo, the fonts will remain.

Thank you for all the help everybody. I'm making progress, but it still doesn't work.

I've installed the newer Opus Percussion Font, and I can see these symbols in Finale now when I select them, but they still show up on the page as question marks.

I've attached a Finale file, and some screen shots of what I'm doing:

I'm trying to create a new expression, in the expression designer box I select Opus Percussion font, then from the text menu I choose 'insert symbol', I'm able to select the symbol I want and it displays correctly in this dialogue box, I hit ok, then in the expression designer box it displays as a question mark, and also in the score it displays as a question mark.

I've been looking for work arounds. If I try to create a text expression, I get the same problem.

But if I create a new articulation using the exact same method above, it works. If I have, I will change all the expression marking in the score to articulations, but I'd prefer not to.

Does anybody know why this isn't working?

Thank you in advance!

If you select the symbol in the expression frame (by dragging across it) does it still say Opus Percussion in the font slot? If it doesn’t, what happens if you scroll down to the font while the symbol is still selected?

Yes, it still displays Opus Percussion as the font when I select it.

This font may have to be added to the Mac Symbol fonts text file. See here:

On a Mac, many fonts are application specific and will not work outside the app.

The workaround is to find the font package and install it into Library/Fonts. This makes it available in Font Book.app

Find the font:
Opus perc.png
Opus perc.png (9.97 KiB) Viewed 5838 times
double-click and Install
Opus 2.png
Opus 2.png (40.82 KiB) Viewed 5838 times
It will now install in FontBook where it should be available to all apps.
Opus 3.png
Opus 3.png (74.54 KiB) Viewed 5838 times
With many notation apps, this does not always work. With Finale, you never know till you try. Normally, with Finale Text, it does.

I'd add the Opus fonts to MacSymbolsFonts.txt too.
The Opus Percussion font that I have uses the 0xF000 area and these fonts should be in MacSymbolsFonts.txt.
