I just can't wrap my head around this. Thanks to Zuill and others, I can do a play first pass/play second pass sort of thing. But can that be applied to layers? In the attached shot, I would like the measure to play both layers on the first pass, but mute layer two on the repeat, so that the rest is honored on that beat.
I don't see a way to specify a layer in the Expression setup.
How do I do it, please?

Remember that it is possible to specify that an expression affects a specific layer on playback (via right click on the handle and Edit Expression Assignment). Then I assume that Playback on Pass X will do the rest.

Thanks, Michel. I'll try it out!!
Ten minutes later...
Rats. It seemed so simple. But it doesn't work. It mutes both layers on the second pass.

How things are set up influences this. HP or No HP? MIDI or Garritan? Those are extremely important to determine the approach.

Well, I was able to get the playback of pass two to near 0. I put zero in for the MIDI velocity for pass 2, but with HP on, it has another mind, and plays a very quiet ghost-like level, but not 0. Turn HP off, and it works. With Garritan, you can change the channel to one that is not being used. That doesn't work for MIDI, however. Finale is fickle.

This info was given by Robert Piechaud (the "Human Playback" developer):
With playback through MIDI, use Controller 11, not volume nor velocity.
Create an expression for 2nd time through, something like: "Tacet 2. x"
In the Playback chiclet, set Controller 11 to zero, and set the text's font style to "Hidden".
Fill in the correct number in the "Play Only on Pass..." input box.
You'll will see this option under the Playback chiclet when you are creating your expression.
Create an expression for “unmuting” after Pass 2, something like: "Play again".
In the Playback chiclet, set Controller 11 to 127.

I tired that (Controller 11) and it works with MIDI, but not with Garritan in the Aria Player.
So, for VST (audio units on Mac, I guess) one still needs a change of channel to an unused one.
However, I think I've found an approach that works for both MIDI and Garritan. See attached. Someone will set me straight if I am wrong, or if this only works on Windows.

I’ll try that out. I’ve also sent it in to tech support, so I’ll report back back if they have an answer.
Thanks, all!

Peter, I couldn't get that to work, but I'll keep trying. In fact, after I tried it and removed it, I have no playback. I cleared MIDI data, but still, nothing.
After restarting Finale, I have sound back.
Zuill, your method worked! Thanks, as always.
edit; One issue, I had to create another expression to cancel out the first one. Happy Mikey, as of this particular point in the space-time continuum...

According to Kevin in CS, the reason I couldn’t make it work is that, even though I specified layer two, the MIDI signal that gets sent affects the channel. So, if I put layer two on a different channel, then the command should work.
I’ll give it a try.

I had it set that way in my demo, but I should have mentioned it, as in the score manager, it's not seen until you drop the list down to show all the layers for the part. Sorry about not mentioning that.
