I am running Finale 2014.5 on a Mac. I am trying to create two different types of Duples in a 3/8 measure. I have included a pic of what I am trying to do but this is extremely time consuming. Once I create what I want I cannot copy and paste because Finale thinks what I am adding should occupy 2+ measures so then I have to revert to last saved. Using the Tuplet Tool, I have tried creating compound (?whatever it's called) using Option + 4 and then getting rid of the number 4 leaving that space blank. Does anyone know what Font is used in the Tuplet Tool? This is my work around. I then will substitute the appropriate number (2 in this case) to replace the 4. Using Option + 4 gives me what I want except for the wrong number which should read 2.
Please, if anyone has some suggestions, I'm all ears!

Thanks,
Scott

Are you using Speedy or Simple Entry? Either way it's not too hard. Once we know we can give the proper advice.

1) There is no need to create quadruplets (= 4 Eighths in the space of 3 Eighths) when you rather need duplets (= 2 Quarters in the space of 3 Eighths).
Just define the tuplet as {2 Quarters in the space of 3 Eighths}.

In this way you will also avoid your laborious workaround of hiding the 4, and adding the 2.

2) From your description I guess that you are using the Speedy Entry Tool, right? (not the Simple Entry Tool)

3) To define the tuplet, hit Option-1.

4) The tuplet font is document specific, not program specific.
Go to
Document menu > Document Options > Fonts > Notation > Tuplet
where you can
- see, what font is used in tuplets (in this document!)
- change the tuplet font

If you're indeed using Speedy, you can speed up the process with 8ths by pressing Option-2, playing the first note as a quarter, then pressing the back arrow and pressing 4 which will change it into an 8th. You can then enter the other notes and rests in one go.

I think this one of the few cases where Simple wins, since you can make the default tuplet definition sticky. Enter the first note and press Alt-9 to set up the tuplet, checking the "save as default" box. From then on, enter the first note, be it quarter or eighth, then press plain 9.

You're right, Motet. Sigh, after all these years I really must learn to use Simple, especially for cases like this one.
