When I call up the template for the concert band score, I see that it includes both cornets and trumpets. I was taught that cornets belong in the band and trumpets belong in the orchestra. What is the standard for high school and college concert bands today? All trumpets?

Yes, that's right - no cornets in the scoring of modern Concert Band/Wind Ensemble compositions.

Professional/semi pro bands still use cornets and trumpets when playing those works originally scored that way (US Marine Band, Kosei Wind Orchestra, etc.).

Thank you. The Finale concert band template needs some work.

So change it to suit your needs, and resave it. Don’t wait for them to do it.

I label all my concert band score staff trumpet parts "trumpet," but I've occasionally used cornet COMB2 samples in place of trumpet samples. I read somewhere, maybe here, I don't remember where, that some composers routinely substitute cornet sounds for trumpet sounds. They claim the sound is mellower. I get a more mellow trumpet sound also by turning down the highs in the trumpet sample equalizers to around 7-8. Otherwise, COMB2 trumpet sounds can be blatty and, well, unrealistic.
