I get that error when I've run another music app with ReWire.
Try going to Audio/MIDI - Device Setup - Reset Rewire.

I got that error recently. I ended up having to wipe all traces of Finale from the Windows system registry, and from C:/Users/{username}/AppData/Roaming/MakeMusic/Finale 2014,
and restore both from backup.
Not for the faint of heart. Took a long time to figure out. Hope you don't have to do it.
(One diagnostic for my situation was that I could log in to a different user account, and have Finale work fine. Hmm... that would imply that maybe just the AppData step, and/or simply clearing the =user= registry, was necessary... Don't have to clobber the system registry, which is more "fraught".)

PS - Saying things more simply: it might work to exit Finale and just move your "Users...Roaming...Finale" user setup folder somewhere where Finale will no longer see it. Then run Finale again and see if it has turned all fresh and new, with an Audio Engine that works again. If nothing's fixed, exit Finale and put the saved setup back to where you found it.
(The above ignores the possibility of the Finale system registry entry being wrong instead. Handling that is more complicated to explain.)

Same problem here, after automatic W10 update to version 1803. Finale 2014 & 2014.5, Error Code no: 7, playback does not work. The IDT audio driver of my Lenovo laptop was changed during the update and I'm guessing that might have caused it. Just a guess though, since I have so far noticed no audio-related problems outside Finale.
A possible clue: after the W10 update I started receiving notifications to the effect that the Dolby Digital Plus system no longer works. However, it seems to work like it did previously.
Any new ideas on possible cause or remedy?

Follow up: Uninstalling and reinstalling (from the Lenovo site) the audio drive did not work. At the first trial the 2014 additionally produced the notification: "One or more MIDI devices not working" (or something like that ).
I use no MIDI keyboard/controller etc, if that's relevant information.

SOLVED! I hope I'm not talking too early (knock wood!)
Following a tip in the Zendesk Forum, I allowed the "apps to access my microphone" in the Privacy settings. Immediately, both the 2014 and the 2014/5 resumed playing back as they did before the problem emerged. Tried a couple of different files, did a reboot, still working well.

Really? I thought that was a Mac only issue with 2014/2014.5. If there's no microphone or audio interface, you have to cheat the system by inserting a plug into the Audio Out jack.sandalwood wrote:SOLVED! I hope I'm not talking too early (knock wood!)

I use no microphone or audio interface and I am quite sure no headphones were plugged in the 2-in-1 audio jack while I changed the "Privacy" settings and launched Finale to see whether playback started working. I'm saying "knock wood" for a reasonMikeHalloran wrote:Really? I thought that was a Mac only issue with 2014/2014.5. I had the same error codes on my backup PC which runs Windows 10, Finale 25.5. After reading this thread I set the control panel privacy to "allow microphone to access..." while flipping the switches off for the various apps, such as Cortana. That fixed the problem. Thanks again for this Forum!

Buenos Dias! This is what I did to solve my problem:
1. I opened Windows Settings
2. I opened Privacy
3. I opened Microphone
4. I turned on "Allow Apps to Access your Microphone".
That was all! I don't know if this will solve your problem. I wish you good luck.

After loading Finale version 26, I immediately got :Error Code 7. To correct this problem, I went to MIDI/Audio, Device Setup, Audio setup and changed the Audio Driver from ASIO to DirectSound. SIMPLE.

I received the "audio engine failed to load Error 7" message after I had moved my workstation which required unplugging all the plugs. After pouring through mountains of support data in Finale and the web it turns out I had plugged the speaker jack into the WRONG port (because I couldn't get to the back of the machine and I had to look at the machine while leaning over the back... sort of seeing the ports upside down). Once I plugged the audio jack into the correct "audio out" port it magically worked! I did not get the dreaded message again. For me this was a really simple solution I had not considered. A real "DUH" moment.

For Windows, this fixed it for me: If you're on Windows, google "Fix sound or audio problems in Windows - Microsoft Support"
...and look for a link to support.microsoft.com...click on that link, say "Yes!" to allowing them to access your
computer...click a few buttons...et voila!...they'll ask you something like "is the problem fixed now?" And you can then bring
up Finale again and hopefully it will be fixed as it was for me...

I get this constantly. My question is - do I really need to restart Finale, or can I just keep working if I don't care about the audio in the program (which I don't)? Is it going to harm my files or the program if I do that?

If you can live with the error pop-ups and you don't care about playback, then I don't think you need to worry. But for me:
You need to go to your iPhone (yes -- iPhone) and Settings > General > Airplay and Handoff > turn off Continuity Camera.
