Gray Notes on Percussion Rolls and Instrumental Trills

Windows, Finale version 25.5.0.290

Upon writing percussion rolls or trills for other instruments, the measure with the rolls/trills becomes a mass of gray and nothing in the measure is visible. It prints out fine, turns into a PDF just fine, but on the Finale score itself, the measure is all gray. I can't adjust anything because nothing else is visible aside from the gray. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Did you apply HP, or use the TGTools playback feature?

If so, these are hidden notes to produce the playback for the rolls and trills.

Hello Zuill,

I used the number "8" while in the articulation mode to make the timpani rolls and used the Trill selection which is also in the articulation mode. It didn't show up this way at first. I used play back a couple of times and then it started to show up. Just noticed that when in playback mode, the gray goes away. Very odd.

Sounds like Human Playback not cleaning up after itself.

MakeMusic needs to get Finale a litter box for Human Playback. This has never happened to me, by the way, but I have seen reports from others that this has happened. I'm just lucky, I guess.

The issue for me is not whether one sees the notes, but the fact that they are there. Unless one chooses to "hard-wire" the playback data from HP, it shouldn't be rendering those notes.

Just thinking (uh-oh) -

If you open a saved file, play it back, and close it without saving, the ghost notes won't be there when you open the file again(?). Of course, if you want to make edits that are needed while listening to playback, that won't work.

Greetings All Ye Who Sought To Help,

Go to "View - Show and uncheck "hidden notes and rests!" It worked. I really dislike having to ask for help (I do ask for directions) but the folks at Finale really came through!! They are spot on all of it!!

Thank you all again and thank you Finale for you help.
