Apologies if this question has been thoroughly answered already, but I didn't find an answer in forum search. This is on Mac platform, Finale 25, High Sierra. I'm trying to open some old Finale files (unsure of the original version, but the file shows: created and modified 4/99? The files appear as Unix executable files (see attachment #1)

. I’ve had some luck with just manually changing a file to “.mus” or “.musx,” which allows them to open, but some not. I’m attaching screenshots of the various error messages, and one of the actual files that won’t open. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone can tell me how to open an SEA, I would be greatly indebted. Thanks!

Addendum: I tried to upload one of the files that wouldn't open, and got this:

If you zip the file first, you should be able to upload it. Or rename it--.exe is definitely not right.

Unless I'm wrong, SEA stands for Self Extracting Archive. I think Stuffit was able to make those and a double click expands them. If you can submit a zipped version here (or via PM), as I still have Stuffit, I might be able to uncompress it, no garantee.

SEA (Self Extracting Archive) was a proprietary archiving method of the "Stuffit" software from pre-Mac OSX days. Try downloading the free Stuffit Expander for OSX and see if that works.

Thanks for the help. I've got a copy of 2014 on an older drive, and that was able to open all of the files. (The mystery files that wouldn't open were not Finale files I suspect...text files created in AppleWorks possibly?). As for the SEA, I did as suggested and got a copy of Stuffit, but that still wasn't able to open. Maybe I can find someone running System 9...?

I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time to conserve disk space, but as you see, you run a risk using some third-party software. ZIP is probably safe for the foreseeable future, though.

This will unzip the .sea on Mac OSX; it's free.

Unarchiver is good. I prefer Keka
https://www.keka.io/en/

Certain builds of Sierra have an unzip bug. Eventide support turned me onto keka.app which handles those problem files from PSP and a few others. I'm pretty sure that Apple fixed it in 10.12.5 but it was pretty annoying till then.
