I created an opaque borderless rectangle (a blank white space) in the expression designer to hide a small portion of bar lines between two grouped staves . . . so that hairpins could cross over these bar lines without touching them. All worked fine, except now I can't figure out how to keep the hairpins in front of the blank white space. After placing the blank space, when I click back on the hairpins, they appear in front as I want them, but then, they somehow revert to being hidden back behind the blank space. Is there a way to do this? Can I create the blank white space on the hairpins themselves, like I can with text? Thanks!

I don’t think so. For years, many of us have asked for a way to stack elements (move to front, move to back, etc.) but we’re still waiting.

I would create the hairpin as a shape expression.
In the Shape Designer you can include a “blank white rectangle” in the shape, select the rectangle, and Send it to Back.

Ordinarily, barlines are not whited out when a hairpin passes through. It just, well, passes through without any fanfare. However, this may be a special case, but just the same, is this really what you want/need?

OK. Thanks for letting me know. I thought it might look better to white out bar lines where hairpins pass through. Glad to know its not necessary. Just checked Gould, and she agrees. Thanks again for all the helpful replies.
