You can assign shortcuts like that on a Mac by using System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts.
I have all of my F keys, and a few control key combinations, mapped that way.

This is the way to go! Forget programming shortcuts within Finale - using the Mac OS will give you more shortcuts than you can possibly remember.miker wrote:You can assign shortcuts like that on a Mac by using System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts.

As Mike says, use the F keys to switch tools - they're easiest to remember and arranged in a nice long row. You can then go to Control A-Z, 1-0 (36 possible shortcuts). If that's not enough, go to Control/Option A-Z, 1-0 for another 36.
Some other things -
√ there is a Keyboard Shortcuts guide in the Finale help manual. These are shortcuts built into Finale. Well worth a look.
√ press Control and click on any object in the score. A contextual menu appears which will take you to common editing functions associated with that item.
√ don't forget that you can switch tools by double clicking on any item in the score with the Selection Tool. It will switch to the tool responsible for that item. To go to the Selection Tool directly, press Escape.

For me, the bigger problem is remembering which modifier keys to hold down in my own, custom shortcuts.N Grossingink wrote:… more shortcuts than you can possibly remember …
Since you do not want a conflict with the already existing “built-in” shortcuts (in Finale or in the OS), you should avoid key combinations that are already in use.
Hence you need to be careful about which modifier keys you hold down in your custom shortcuts.
As a consequence, in my own, custom shortcuts I hold down all the modifier keys.
In can remember that - and there is little risk of conflict with existing shortcuts.
Example:
⇧⌃⌥⌘A is my shortcut for Show Active Layer Only
Mac OS X 12.6.9 (Monterey), Finale user since 1996
Wow you guys,
Seems like this is going to open up a whole new world for me! I had no idea about that thing in System Prefs, looks really amazing.
I'll try this all out, thanks so much for the suggestions,
Patrick

As you will see from my system shortcut list for Finale in the screenshot, it's sometimes helpful to include -> to establish the path. Most of these shortcuts were my own creations, but some were pre-existing in Finale.PJZ wrote:… …Seems like this is going to open up a whole new world for me! To set them up click + then Finale. They usually seem to transfer automatically from one version of Finale to the next.

Hey all--
I've been digging into this and indeed it's quite useful indeed, going back to the manual there were some shortcuts I wasn't aware of.
Some also don't work for me, for instance, Change Layers it has SHIFT+ALT+layer number, whereas for me it has always been command+option+layer number. (Or, in their parlance, CTRL+ALT+layer number).
Clear All Items BACKSPACE (Laptops Fn-6) doesn't work for me, maybe because the Fn key on my new Mac actually makes the rest of the function keys appear.
I tried setting that up in my system preferences, but couldn't make it work, even using the technique David suggested:
Edit -> Clear All Items
Any suggestions here? I was able to get it to work for switching tools...
Thanks, Patrick
Btw it does appear that all my keys are functional-- control, option, command, and shift are all behaving normally in most contexts.

PJZ,
From your description it sounds like are using Mac Finale, but are reading the online manual for Windows Finale.
In many Finale hotkeys the Ctrl key in Windows Finale corresponds to the Option key in Mac Finale.
Example:
To enter a triplet in Speedy Entry, hit Ctrl-3 in Windows Finale, Option-3 in Mac Finale.
However, in other hotkeys the Ctrl key in Windows Finale corresponds to the Command key in Mac Finale.
Windows Finale has {CTRL+ALT+layer number} (If I Recall Correctly).
Also, in Mac Finale the Speedy Entry Tool can cycle through the layers via Shift-UpArrow and Shift-DownArrow.
In my own copy of v25.5 I can Clear All with Fn-Shift-Backspace.

Do you have v25.5 (= the latest update to v25)?PJZ wrote:… Clear All Items BACKSPACE (Laptops Fn-6) doesn't work for me, maybe because the Fn key on my new Mac actually makes the rest of the function keys appear.

The Mac CONTROL key is shown as a caret, or circumflex. Shift-6 on a US keyboard. ^PJZ wrote:PS, within the finale shortcuts, since my "Command" or Apple key is listed as CTRL, what is my "control" key even listed as? Can't find an example of it...

Hi all, thanks again for replies.
I am indeed using a Mac and-- feeling mightily clueless-- cannot find an analogous page for Mac, nor Finale 25. The page that N sent me to was
http://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/Fina ... Clicks.htm
I do know that symbol for "Control," but as Peter noted I was looking at Windows shortcuts, which is why it wasn't being mentioned.

I apologize for sending you to the Windows shortcuts instead of the Mac. You can always access the Mac shortcuts on your computer under the Help menu.

Hi all,
Thanks for the link to the Mac shortcuts. No idea why I couldn't find it directly from the manual.
I've taken to moving to Staff Tool before doing my one-click mass pastes, it's a teeny bit annoying but just one extra set of keystrokes, it's fine. The one-click Mass Paste still doesn't work in Measure Tool like it used to, now that seems to be assigned to "Force Measure Number." I wish I could change that but I guess you can't change key commands?
This other mystery: I have always assigned as my shortcut to go to the expression tool
CONTROL + ;
Now, in finale 25, when I'm in Speedy and I want to move to expression, the menu lights up as if that is a key command WITHIN speedy.
When I look at all the commands in the speedy menu however, I don't find this combination listed anywhere, nor do I find it listed in the key commands list you pointed me to in the manual.
Any idea what this is doing, why it is doing it and if I can stop it from doing it? For now, I have to switch back to another tool, THEN switch to expression tool, can't go directly between speedy and expression.
Thanks again,
Patrick
