Using the standard A, B, C etc. is no problem. However, in the piece I'm doing, there is the occasional out of sequence change: A, B, C1, C2, D...
Is there a way to handle this, or should I just use text inserts?

I would just duplicate the letter style rehearsal mark and add a "1" in the designer box of the copy. When you enter it it will be "A1", but right click and edit the sequence to read "C1". Do the same for "C2".

And after the last Cx you can revert to the A,B,C sequencing and right click on it to start at D.
If you have a whole bunch of C's--e.g. if it went to C10, say--then you can do as below and create an auto-numbering C1,C2,C3,.. by duplicating 1,2,3,... and adding a C in front (thanks to Zuill for this trick). But if it's only a couple, I would just do as N suggests.

Another way to do it if the C1, C@ etc. is only occasional:
Change the definition of the original expression (assigned to the M metatool) to the second option in the dropdown list. It goes through the alphabet, then starts with A1, B1, etc.
Now, where the C1 needs to be, select Edit Rehearsal Mark Sequence, and click restart Sequence at:
Type C1 there. The next entry will say D1. Repeat steps above and type C2 in the slot. repeat as needed.
Then, where D is needed, repeat the steps and type D.
This way, you only have one expression that works for all.
