Suddenly I get this message when I try to make cue notes: "Cue notes could not be created. It is possible you have reached Finale's maximum amount of measures with notes." I haven't had any problem with cue notes until now. I've been doing my score, which is rather large) in sections so I take a copy of the previous section, delete everything, and start the new section. I assume since I delete everything, it's empty except for the format which is why I'm doing it this way. Does anyone know what it means that I've reached Finale's maximum amount of measures with notes?

Can you enter notes normally, other than the cue notes? Finale does have a limit, although I don't recall what it is.

I've had this a couple of times and I had to do exactly what you've done: split up the score into separate files.

Go to Document Menu > Data Check and run the File Maintenance command. This will strip out any data like entries or measure assignments that the file may "think" are still there even though they have been deleted.

If you want to split the score into separate files, I'd suggest you make up a blank template for the specific instrumentation before you begin. Use a copy of this template for the first part. For each succeeding part, use a copy of your blank template so you are entering music on a clean, unused file.

I've done the file maintenance several times and it always comes up with zeros on the right side for deleted items so I've assumed it they were automatically deleted when I would open the file. In my old Finale 2009, (I now have Finale 25X on High Sierra) whenever I did file maintenance, it would have lots in the right hand column. I recently did another very large work with 231 pages on my new Finale with many cues and never had this problem. In fact, the problem occurred on the first cue I tried to put in. Maybe I should try copying and pasting it on an entirely new file in case the one I'm working on is corrupted. I'll try that.

Well, of all things, it was because of the view! I had it in a view that didn't show some of the staves so apparently when I tried to put in the cues, that somehow blocked the cues from going in. In any case, when I used "all staves," it worked but when I tried a staff set, it didn't. Who needs video games when you can work with Finale?

I'm glad it's resolved.

For the record Document/Data check/File maintenance will show the number of frames used. The limit is, I believe, 32676. Either that or 65535.

What I don't understand is why Document/Data check/File maintenance doesn't show what's been deleted. It's always zeros in the right hand column. But since I've never gone beyond 2,000 frames or frame assignments or 7,000 entries, I guess I'm safe. I always start a new file and then hook the PDFs together to keep it wieldy.

I don't think that column means things you've deleted; rather, it's what's been cleaned up in that run of File Maintenance. The default is to run it whenever you open the file.
