I'd like to position some articulation symbols further away from the noteheads they are attached to. There is no problem doing this when the symbol goes above the stave (i.e., the stem of the note involved goes down), but when the symbol must be placed below the stave (i.e., the stem of the note goes up), then the symbol is very close to the notehead, and is often inside the stave (even if I specify "always place outside staff" in the Articulation Designer pane).
How can I do this?

I do not experience that problem with the default articulations.
I suppose that your articulation is a custom articulation, right?
Either attach a Finale document here,
or
attach screen shots of your settings in Articulation Definition and Handle Positioning.
Then I am sure someone can find the culprit.

It's most likely a bad setting. Prior to Finale 2016, you need to define two instances for every articulation, one for above the note and one for below, or one for note-side and one for stem-side. (I'm looking forward to not having to do this anymore with the next update!)
