For my orchestra scores, I like to often have two parts on the same line (e.g. flute 1/2) in the score. I also like to split this single staff into two parts using Manage Parts > Specify Voicing.

This means, though, that in the score I need to input expressions like "1.", "2.", "a2", etc. so the conductor knows who is playing which part. The players don't need those expressions in their part. I've always just gone through and hidden them in all the parts.

Is there a way to define an expression to automatically be shown in the score and hidden in the part?
Nick

Create a new category (duplicate a category which uses score lists).
Define a score list that displays expressions on the score only.
Put your expressions (a2, etc...) in that category.

create an expression category for them that is defined as showing in score, but not parts?

Hi Michael,

I can figure out how to do that for items like Tempo Markings. I'm currently entering these expressions as technique text because they belong to the staff, not the system.

How can I do this for technique text?

AFAIK, you can't, you need a category with a score list. But you can duplicate a category which has score lists, and adjust the default appearance of its contents so that these expressions look similar to your technique expressions.
But the problem is that if you need an expression in several specific staves of the score only, you need a category and score list for each staff which is concerned. And we only have 8 score lists...
P.S. : if you want to export/reimport this category (as a text library), remember that it should not be 100% identical to the Technique category.

Perhaps staff styles would help--I don't know.

It's probably too late for this now, but what I do is enter each part on a separate staff and use those for the parts, then combine them in a third staff to be used in the score, where you can add I., II., and a2. The individuals can be omitted from the printed score.

It means having the music in two places, a drawback if you need to make corrections, but if you make the combined staff late in the game it works out OK. That way there's nothing to hide. I've seen complaints about the "voicing" feature (I don't recall what they were), so this gets around those, whatever they may be. I also find it easier to enter music using two staves rather than fooling with layers.

Rather than hiding in the part, I right click the handle and edit the Expression assignment to only show in the score. I know this is not what you want. However, to speed things up, you can use Jari's JW Change plugin to do it for you. It saves some work.

P.S.: I should mention that if you create a category for just these expressions, you can change the assignments, with the plugin, all at once by choosing the category in the appropriate filter (in the plugin).

Thanks Zuill!

Just tried this in one of my scores and it make the process 20x faster than manually hiding each expression.
