Finale won't let me hide a whole rest in 6/8. I just want an empty measure.

Is this a Real Rest or Default Rest?

It's a default rest.

There are 2 ways you can fix this:

1. Create a Staff Style set to not display Default Whole rests.

2. Enter a Real Rest and manually hide that.

There are other ways, but those are the easiest. #2 is the quickest.

Simple Entry by default won't let you enter a whole rest in 6/8. Go to "Simple Entry options" and uncheck "Check for extra notes" first. Then you can enter the whole rest and hide it. (You may want to recheck it later, since it is in general a good thing).

Or, actually, just enter a dotted half rest and hide that; no need to change the option.

1. If you’re going to hide the rest, there’s no need for it to have any particular note value, especially a whole note which would overfill the measure. In this case I’d just enter a quarter and hide it.
2. If you’re entering cross-staff notes, you should use the TG Tools plugin for it which is not only easy to use (select the notes and press opt-arrow key) but enters a hidden rest automatically.

And I think it would look better with the beam between the staves, which is what th4e plug-in gives you.

Those of us who like "fill with rests" would probably not like underfilling with a quarter note, either. If you use fill-with-rests and ever happen to visit the measure again, either deliberate or accidentally, you would get unwanted and visible rests.
