Smart shapes and breaking MM rests

Post by OCTO » Sun Sep 23, 2018 10:48 am

Is it possible that Smart shapes break multi-measure rests?
I use repeating line through several measures, and would like that Finale does NOT create MM for these "empty" measures (applied to one instrument only, not the score).

As Far As I Know, there is no option in smart shapes to break a multimeasure rest.

An expression can break a multimeasure rest.

Also, you can use the Measure Tool.
Double-click the measure.
In the Measure Attributes you can select the option “Break a Multimeasure Rest”.

NB:
The option “Break a Multimeasure Rest” will make the measure’s right barline break a multimeasure rest.

The measure’s left barline will never break a multimeasure rest.
But you can select “Break a Multimeasure Rest” for the right barline in the previous measure.

Note he said, "applied to one instrument only, not the score," though.

I think the easiest solution would be to put real whole rests in the (empty) measures in question.

Thank you. I see I have to find a workaround.
I must put something and hide, since these measures should look "empty", yet with a free improvisation or similar. Anyway the measures are to be played, therefore my question.

Just add real whole rests as I say. They will break multimeasure rests and the measures will look empty. Nothing to hide.

The easy way to add real whole rests is to use the Plug-in.

Highlight the measures

Plug-ins > Note, Beam, and Rest Editing > Change to Real Whole Rests

Sorry if I understand you correctly, but if I make whole rest than the measure is not empty. I need a completely blank measure.

Could there be hidden whole rests?

Also, if that doesn't work, you can manually make and break the multimeasure rests. Edit > Multimeasure Rests

You can use a custom staff style to make the measures display no rests.

A staff style with Blank Notation will also break a multimeasure rest, even if the measures are completely empty.

This works indeed wonderfully – thank you.

I didn't know that a Staff Style (here blank notation) can break MM rests. Now it saves my life, or perhaps many hours.

It is not all staff styles that can break a multimeasure rest.

If I Recall Correctly, only staff styles with Alternate Notation can break a multimeasure rest.

Well, that is VERY important to remember. I will print out this now!
