Hi all,

May I ask: When extending a hairpin crescendo from say beat 1 of a 4/4 bar to beat 1 of a 5/4 bar all on one single system, should the hairpin extend right up to the dynamic on the beat 1 of the 5/4 bar , or should the hairpin stop at the closing bar line of the 4/4 bar and not extend under the 5/4 time signature? (NB, it's all on one system).

Cheerio and thnx,
Hector.

the hairpin can cross the barline and end shortly before the dynamic. it's a choice.
I generally do so in my scores. I almost always have hairpins at time signature changes extend under the new time signature.

Finale can mess up all this, particularly when you have parts that break the system at different places than the score.
Than you get this ugly tiny "rest" of the hairpin in the next system.

So I never use that way, but just finish precisely on the barline, or just before.
