Dashed barlines problem/bug
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hi
I've been trying to use dashed barlines, though in the middle of my score two staffs get a solid line (like shown in the picture). I have no other staffstyle on these staffs or anything and I have chosen dashed barlines with the measure-tool!
Have anyone ecountered this problem?

One possibility is that those two staves belong to a group and you have them set to an alternate barline in Group Attributes. This would override any setting in the Measure Attributes window.

By The Way:
William, your barlines look a bit thin.
I would make them thicker.
Traditionally there are three thicknesses in engraving.
Thickest are barlines (stand out),
then stems (and ledger lines),
thinnest are staff lines.

Indeed, when will MM get this right? The settings for Finale's default documents have the bar lines, stem lines and staff lines all at the same thickness, with only the ledger lines being slightly thicker. This sets a bad precedent.

We're getting away from the original question, but Peter and Vaughn, what settings do you use for the various lines?

I do everything in EVPUs, which I prefer to units which require many numbers behind the decimal point. Here they are, from thin to thick:
Staff lines: 2.5
Stems: 3
Ledger lines: 3.5
Barlines: 4
Personally I prefer my ledger lines to be slightly thicker than the stems, but one could consolidate these into one setting.

I checked and they don't have an alternate barline setting! Though I forgot to mention, this (whats shown in the picture) appears in the middle of a page, so the bars before these are as they should, then suddenly these two staffs get their own barline!Vaughan wrote:One possibility is that those two staves belong to a group and you have them set to an alternate barline in Group Attributes. In Finale, you can have more than one group at a time on the same system. This can cause some interesting results. We can probably be of better help if you can post a Finale file, instead of just a picture. That way, we can diagnose the situation.

And to tack this observation onto Vaughan's post:I do everything in EVPUs, which I prefer to units which require many numbers behind the decimal point. Here they are, from thin to thick:

Note that whatever measurement unit you choose, you can always enter values in other units on the fly by following the number you enter with the letters e for EVPUs, s for spaces, p for picas, and i for inches. I have found that very useful, since I like to use inches overall, but frequently enter small values in EVPUs.

You can change the measurement units “on the fly” by typing in a number in one of the measurement dialogs followed by
e for EVPUs (or evpus, or EVPUs)
pt for points (or pts, or points) 1pt = 4e
s for spaces (or sp, or spaces) 1s = 6pt
p for picas (or pi, or picas) 1p = 2s
i for inches (or ", or in, or inch, or inches) 1i = 6p
c for centimeters (or cm, or centimeters)
m for millimeters (or mm, or millimeters)
(BTW, these are all listed in the online docs, I think in the section on the Measurement Units submenu.) For example, I usually leave the default units to Points, but if I want to move an articulation horizontally over by a small amount, I just type "2e" in the H box in the Change Articulation Assignments dialog, and Finale does the rest.
Note: When you’re overriding the global setting in this way, you even have an extra unit option (millimeters) not available in the sub-menu for Measurement Units.

Sure, I'll attatch a finale file here! On page one you can see the problem!

Upon careful examination, what you actually have is an overlap of 2 dashed lines, so it looks like a slid line. I can't say why it has happened this way. However, my attached revised file at least looks proper.

Thank you so much! How did you revise it? Or did you create a new file?zuill wrote:Upon careful examination, what you actually have is an overlap of 2 dashed lines, so it looks like a slid line. I can't say why it has happened this way. However, my attached revised file at least looks proper.
