split 16ths

I'm looking to recreate this sort of (what I'm calling) split 16th notation. I've tried special tools, tried using 2 voices and hiding rests, tried special beaming...
any help would be appreciated!

You're on the right track. Use 2 layers with rests. However, hiding the rests breaks the beams. Instead, keep the rests, but move them off the page (use a high number so that they are no longer visible on the page).

What do you mean 'use a high number'? I traditionally use simple entry and arrow keys to move rests or notes. I'm guessing you're talking about an entry box somewhere that I can change all rests to a specific 'height'?zuill wrote:but move them off the page (use a high number so that they are no longer visible on the page).

You could use the plug-in Move Rests.

Okay, its looking better. However compare my Finale image here against the image in my OP. The 16th note beam is broken. I tried the Beam Extension Tool but it would only work on the outermost beams.

Or use Jari's JW Change plugin. (I posted this while you were posting your picture.)

P.S.: In Document Options/Beams, choose the option to extend secondary beams over rests.

Though with that option, if you use the following rhythm elsewhere in your piece, you get this rather ugly result. (I seem to recall that Mr. Zuill might have a fix, though).

The fix is a workaround. If the situation in the example in this thread is the rare exception in a file, then don't check the option, and then manually drag the secondary beams in the Split 16th measure using the Beam Extension Tool in Special Tools. Uncheck 8th, and check 16th in the dialogue box.

I found where we discussed this before. It's way complicated, and none of the work-arounds are perfect. You had something about entering a rest in voice 2. I ended up not using the "extend over rests" option, instead using smart lines on top of the un-extended secondary beams, which was fairly easy to do since the smart lines snap to beats, but sometimes rests had to be moved, and I think depending on whether stems were up or down the smart line was easier to place in one case that the other.
