Notating Harp Glissandos

Post by SamGroude1 » Sat Nov 17, 2018 5:10 pm

I am hoping someone can advise me on the best/most efficient way to correctly notate a harp glissando. I would like to show all 7 notes of the diatonic scale (with accidentals where applicable), and also have the initial note of the gliss. contain the complete rhythmic value the glissando will cover. Also want the final 6 note heads to be smaller.

This link shows what I am trying to do, but does not tell how to hide the beams and stems, and how to resize the notes.
http://www.dosblanc.ca/music/examples/h ... torial.pdf

My version of JW Change does not seem to have the option, under beams, for hiding and/or removing them. Also, I can create a septuplet and hide the number seven and its bracket, but Finale won't let me change the note size for only the last 6 of the 7 notes. If I un-beam the first and second notes, I am able to change the note size for the last 6 notes, but then I don't know how to remove only the flag from the first note, and keep its stem.

Hopefully there is a better, faster way to do this. Being much more of a musician than a computer person, I am always very grateful for step-by-step instructions, if possible.

Many thanks

using Finale 26 on Mac Mohave

Some ideas:

1) To get rid of the beam(s), define the tuplet as “7 Quarters in the space of…”

2) To resize the noteheads of only the last 6 notes:
I could be wrong, but I think that the fastest way is the Resize Tool (icon: %).
Context-click on the notehead.
In the context menu, choose “Resize Notehead…”.
You will have to resize the noteheads one by one, but it does not take long.

You can use JW Change to hide the stems and beams but it's a 2 step process:

Set the dialog to run "Beams > Visibility > Hide", then run "Stems > Visibility > Hide". However, JW Change has a way of making these 2 operations into a sequence that runs in one step. For making sequences, see https://www.scoringnotes.com/tutorials/ ... ate-tasks/

If you are only using 7-tuplets, you might want to consider using a JW Lua script. This will do all the correct notation automatically.

Jari created a tutorial on how to do this:

Hope this helps

Peter, many thanks for the quarter note suggestion. Didn’t realize Finale would allow 7 quarters in the space of one. Also, it did let me select all six notes and change their note size all at once using “change.”

N., in my JW Change, under beams and stems, I don’t see the option for hiding. How do I find it!

Nick, thanks for the JW Lua tutorial. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

It is under "Visibility".

Michelp,

When I open up JW Change and click on the "Beam" option in the left hand box, all that comes up is a sentence that says: "Tasks for modifying beams.", a drop down menu labeled "filters", a "Reset" button, a "Sequence Editor" option and "Close". I don't see the word "Visibility" anywhere. Do I need an upgraded version of JW Change?

Thanks,
Sam
